Jonathan T. Overpeck’s appointment marks U-M’s advance toward global leadership in sustainability and environmental research and education. Dean Overpeck will debut his vision for the future of SEAS during the University's Bicentennial Fall Festival. SEAS Opening Ceremonies will take place over U-M's Homecoming Weekend Thurs. Oct. 26 through Sat. Oct. 28.

U-M students and faculty will soon be able to navigate U-M's North Campus more efficiently through fully automated, driverless shuttle buses built with the French start-up company Navya. As the brainchild of a U-M student team from the School of Engineering, the autonomous buses are taking advantage of M-City, a 32-acre testing ground regularly used by companies such as General Motors, Toyota, Honda, and BMW.

A U-M team from the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Nichols Arboretum, and the Department of Anthropology has been partnering with the Michigan Anishinaabe tribal communities to identify key issues and develop protocols for sharing heritage seeds in University collections. Nick Barrett is a Ross School of Business and SEAS Graduate student who used funding from the Erb Sustainability Institute to understand Cuba's renewable energy landscape as an economy in transition. Through his project, he has identified Cuba's sugarcane crops as the ideal renewable and green energy source for the country’s rapidly changing economy.
