We will host an Explore Clemson UMC dinner for prospective members on Sunday, September 24 at 6pm in the overflow room (room 308) of the Worship Center. We'll share a meal together, learn about ministry and discipleship opportunities here at Clemson, and spend some time talking about the meaning of membership in The United Methodist Church. Email Jim Morgan at jim@clemsonumc.org to RSVP.

Beyond Words: a book club that will meet the third or fourth Sunday every month during the school year.
Our first meeting will be Sunday, September 24 at 3pm at the home of Charlotte Branyon (107 Sedgefield Drive). Join us for fellowship and snacks as we talk about our faith and our daily struggles. The first book we will study is “The Happiness Dare: Pursuing Your Heart’s Deepest, Holiest and Most Vulnerable Desire" by Jennifer Dukes Lee, which can be purchased online or at your local bookstore. Childcare will be provided at the church. For more information please email Charlotte Branyon at cjbranyo@bellsouth.net or Chrissy Mazer at chrissymazer@gmail.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE! this week:
Dinner at 5:30pm followed by a program at 6pm in the Christian Life Center. Our meal will be prepared by Pastor Jim Morgan with proceeds going to a local family of five with three young children whose home burned down during last week's storm. Menu: pulled pork sandwiches, roasted potatoes, coleslaw and dessert. Our program is being led by Pastor Keith. We will explore the role of humor in the Christian faith. By looking at examples of some of the church's saints, we can learn how laughter and good humor are gifts. Not that we are to deny sadness in our lives and world, but neither are Christians called to the kind of humorless austerity that some might suggest. Join us as we ponder the humor of Jesus and the saints. We may even laugh a little!

Bahamas Mission Trip
Clemson UMC is looking to go to Eleuthera, Bahamas on a mission trip March 31-April 7, 2018 to continue the mission work the church has done for many years now. The cost of the trip will be $1,350 per person. If interested, please contact Director of Youth Ministry Cameron Shaw (cameron@clemsonumc.org).

Silent Auction Items Needed:
Over the next few weeks we will be gathering items to include in the Silent Auction that will be part of CUMC’s Bazaar scheduled for October 21. Please support this event by donating an item, service or activity that could be auctioned. A few ideas: needlework, pottery, stained glass, wood carvings, gift baskets, tickets for an upcoming event or game, babysitting, pet sitting, restaurant gift certificate, weekend at beach/mountain house, tours, framed photograph, etc. A drop off point at CUMC for these items is room 103 in the office building. With questions or suggestions, contact Sherrie Thompson (864-918 2240, ssherrie1981@att.net) or Nancy Tompkins (864-710-4423, nancytompkins@charter.net).
All proceeds from the event will fund CUMC ministries.

Still Searching for your Small Group?
Come read and react with the Monday Night Discussion Group as we start a study of John Spong’s The Fourth Gospel: Tales of a Jewish Mystic on September 25.  Spong is a retired Episcopal bishop well known for his candor in calling for a more progressive, compassionate Christianity. Some of the chapters in The Fourth Gospel began as ideas expressed in a series of talks Bishop Spong gave here at CUMC several years ago. Spong describes himself as “increasingly drawn to a Christianity that has no separating barriers.” Our eclectic Monday group welcomes members and friends of all ages. Find us in room 116 of the Office Building at 7:30pm, and find book copies online. For more information please contact Francie Mizell at mframize@att.net.

Announcing a fundraising dinner for hurricane relief!
The owners of Village Bakery and Cafe, Pendleton, are partnering with Clemson UMC to host a dinner at the restaurant on Tuesday, September 26, 5-8pm. There will be live music, courtesy of Pastor Jim and friends, as well as an opportunity to join with neighbors in a wonderful meal, all while raising money for a worthy cause. All proceeds will be used for hurricane relief through the United Methodist Committee on Relief and Islamic Relief USA. You may purchase tickets as you leave the church today or in the church office. Tickets are also available at the Village Bakery and Cafe.

Craft Christianity
This is a small group for adults on Thursday evenings at 6pm meeting at Elkmont Tap and Cellar, 100 Liberty Drive, Clemson (less than one mile from the CUMC campus). Childcare will be provided at the church in room 406 of the Christian Life Center. Come join other adults for a weekly discussion on what it means to be followers of Jesus in our particular time and place. There is no preparation necessary to participate in this group!

Christmas Shoebox Ministry
We are collecting shoeboxes with lids that we can use to send Christmas gifts to Native American children on reservations. Please contact Marie Schmidt (marie@clemsonumc.org) with questions. There will be a collection box for your donated shoeboxes in the Christian Life Center Lobby and the Narthex.

SAVE THE DATE - Thursday evening, November 2
No! It’s not a wedding or a baby shower! It’s the 15th annual MINISTERS’ COOK-OFF. It will be held right here in the Christian Life Center and our own Rev. Jim Morgan, along with approximately 12 other area ministers, will be cooking up some great food to help raise money for SAFE HARBOR. So, mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Little Lights Learning Center here at Clemson UMC is hiring full-time teachers to work 8am to 5pm. If interested please contact director Redell Reese-DuPree at redellr@clemsonumc.org.

Hurricane/Storm Relief
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working to bring relief and comfort to those suffering from the impact of recent storms. You are invited to help with the relief efforts by making a contribution to this work. You may contribute through Clemson UMC. Simply indicate that your gift is for hurricane/storm relief and we will get it to the relief agency. Remember, 100% of funds donated to these relief efforts go to relief efforts. Staff and overhead are already in place to respond to disasters. You may also give online at our website (www.clemsonumc.org) or directly to UMCOR at www.umcor.org.
