HONOURS & AWARDS

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada awarded federal NSERC Discovery Grants to 15 faculty members at UTM conducting research in the fields of biology, chemical and physical sciences, mathematical and computational sciences and psychology. Additional funding was also awarded to math and computational sciences Professor Dehan Kong, who was awarded a Discovery Accelerator Supplement, and Assistant Professor Loren Martin, of the Department of Psychology, who was awarded an NSERC Research Tools and Instruments grant.
Assistant professors Katharina Braeutigam and Bailey McMeans, of the Department of Biology, and assistant professors Loren Martin and Jennifer Stellar, of the Department of Psychology, are among 27 U of T Scholars sharing $5.7 million in research funding from the Government of Canada. The Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund is designed to help universities attract and retain the best and brightest researchers from around the world.

Visual studies lecturer Cheryl Thompson argues why confronting racism by removing monuments and renaming schools is a step in the right direction for Rabble.ca.

Metro News and CBC’s Ontario Morning and Metro Morning programs covered new research by Assistant Professor of geography Matthew Adams which found higher pollution levels in school drop-off zones.

Hundreds of international media outlets, including the Daily Mail and the Toronto Star covered new research about about predatory prehistoric frogs by Professor Robert Reisz, of the Department of Biology.
The CBC News North, Radio-Canada and Global News were among the outlets that covered new findings by Assistant Professor Tracey Galloway, of the Department of Anthropology, which linked severe hunger at residential schools to the current health issues of Indigenous people in Canada.
 
Assistant Professor Erin Tolley, of the Department of Political Science, provided context about race, discrimination and politics for news coverage of a racist heckler who interrupted NDP leadership candidate Jagmeet Singh at a recent event. Tolley’s comments appeared in the Toronto Star and other publications.
 
Management Professor Lisa Kramer wrote an op-ed column for the Toronto Star, arguing that consumer demand will lead to lab-made ‘clean meat.’
