Wold Nuclear Associaton calls the nuclear industry to action

The World Nuclear Association (WNA) held its annual Symposium in London this week and yesterday Director-General Agneta Rising called on governments to do more to ensure that nuclear energy makes the full contribution that society requires to meet its future clean energy needs.

Noting that nuclear generation has been providing low-carbon electricity for more than 60 years, Rising said she was issuing a "call to action".

More than 900 of the world’s largest companies have a plan to cut their carbon pollution but only a fraction are doing enough to meet the goals aimed at reducing the impacts of global warming agreed outlined in the Paris climate change accord.

Electricity generation is responsible for about 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and a key advantage of nuclear is its demonstrable ability to provide reliable and economic zero-carbon baseload power.

Berkeley Energia Managing Director, Paul Atherley, commented:

"We fully support the call to action and are of the view that it is Renewables AND Nuclear, rather than Renewables OR Nuclear that will enable society to meet its climate change targets."
