The Muslim Student Association Lone Star Council Demands Justice for the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

Oh you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor..."
[Quran, 4:135]

In 2013, the United Nations described the Muslim Rohingya people in the Rakhine state of Myanmar as the most persecuted minorities in the world. For many years, this minority group has been subjected to violence, torture, and rape in what many call ethnic cleansing and genocide.

This largely marginalized group is not receiving the justice they deserve. The Myanmar government has denied them citizenship rendering them stateless with very limited access to education, jobs, travel, health services and other legal protections. Despite many confirmed reports of human rights violations, the government of Myanmar continues to deny allegations to ethnic cleansing towards the Rohingya and recently rejected the UN access to Myanmar to further investigate these allegations. The MSA Lone Star Council and its affiliates strongly condemns the violence against the Muslim Rohingya and demand justice for the Myanmarese.

Continued attention and action from the international community are essential. The MSA Lone Star Council urges the global community to utilize the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement to put economic and political pressure on Myanmar to end the violence and injustices. Myanmar's good relations with foreign countries will be damaged if they continue their persecution against the Rohingya people.

MSA Lone Star Council encourages our community to take the following actions:
  • We encourage MSA members to take advantage of social media and contact international influencers and news networks to raise awareness on this issue with the hashtag #JusticeForTheRohingya and #Rohingya
  • We encourage our MSA members to contact their government representatives to call attention to Myanmar.
  • We urge the community to utilize the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement against Myanmar to increase economic and political pressure and put an end to the senseless violence.
  • Consider supporting the Rohingya Direct Relief hosted by LaunchGood and us-Sunnah. 100% of the money goes directly to Muslims on-site providing aid in Myanmar.
  • Members of DFW area MSAs attend the Protest Against the Rohingya Genocide Sunday, Sept 17 at 3pm at Dealy Plaza
  • Members in the greater Houston area attend the emergency "silent protest" co-sponsored by Physicians, Caretakers of Greater Houston, Houston Office of CAIR and ICNA at the corner of Post Oak Blvd and Westheimer Street on Sunday, Sept 17, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
