Delivering the prayer at Thanksgiving brought the pray-er esteem, attention, and the first place in line at the buffet. So, at 4-years-old I started an aggressive campaign of asking if I could say the prayer. At 6, I was given the responsibility on a "just this once" basis. But "Once" is all a professional needs. I was seen emphatically practicing in the cow pasture all morning. When the moment came and the heads were bowed I said the Pledge of Allegiance as if it were a slam poem then took my place at the front of the food line. The house was divided as to whether I should be punished or permanently hired.

Write about over-preparing. Maybe Donna memorized every Applebee's menu item so she could discuss them on the date. Maybe Uncle Marcus sent invites to his birthday the day after his last birthday. Maybe it turns out that you didn't need to know anything about seatbelt material manufacturers to get your driver's license. Either way, write about the nerves, forethought, or careful planning someone clung to.
