Model for the New Building
As previously stated, Camille has been working on a model for the new Azule building. The foundation of this structure was put in place six years ago, and as Camille explains in the video below, "we stopped building at the level when it became wood", and where the foundational structure, which contains fully developed septic, water, and electric systems, could wait future developments without giving way to time and the elements.
This new building will allow the number of possible Azule residents to comfortably go from three to eight, a change that will truly make this space a sustainable and optimized resource. This new building will house additional residential units, a supplemental kitchen, in addition to woodworking, metalsmithing, weaving, and pottery facilities.
The model is built so that one inch represents one foot, and in the above photo and video below viewers can see how the model stacks up with the existing structure.
Azule is actively raising funds for this new enterprise. Read on for ways you can assist in this building coming to fruition.

Camille adds: "We have a kiln, a potter's wheel, 5 looms and woodworking tools to fill the workshops. That is why we need the barn/workshop building."

La Voz de los Jovenes - a truly exciting educational and cultural collective from Asheville Writers in the Schools spent a rewarding weekend in early August planning the year ahead. From their website:
Word on the Street is an online publication, designed to give youth in communities of color a voice, and an opportunity to show their gifts and talents. We need young people who are passionate about their community, to help others share their perspectives through art, and self-expression. In the process, youth will develop as leaders, display their own creativity, and work towards breaking down barriers in people’s lives.

Nava Levenson was our visual artist in residence during August. Nava came to us from Richmond, VA to expand our awareness of what was possible with a simple crochet stitch and 5-cent pasta. Her bold conceptual crocheted pasta production line brings to viewers and participants in her 'performance art' offering a critical awareness of how art, craft, labor, and the marketplace intersect. From her website: "How To Crochet Pasta sets up a space specifically for the production of crocheted pasta. This project utilizes transparency in order to open discussion on the value of food preparation." Her idea for this project came from a leap of inspiration as she accumulated work-trade hours in the kitchen of a residency stint at Arrowmont School of Arts and Craft where she was studying the traditional craft of crochet. More on Nava's exciting work can be found here.

Lee Ann Brown - Lee Ann Brown is a New York-based poet originally from North Carolina, who divides her time between her teaching position at St. Johns University and Marshall, NC. She founded Tender Buttons Press, which has been publishing experimental women's poetry since 1989.
Lee Ann organized a weekend retreat at Azule retreat revolving around poetry and astrology around the eclipse time. "That's what we're here for, to speak personally with the sun, with the moon that's going to come across the sun, and see what the eclipse means for us, and for our community, and for our world in this time of transition and great change."
Readers can learn more about Lee Ann here and about Tender Buttons Press here.

This place has nourished me and allowed for a sweet opening of my mind and heart. Thank you." Liana Johannaber from GO, Green Opportunities, Asheville, NC.
