Canoe Trip to the Toronto Harbourfront

This past Thursday, Kita Shalhevet went to the Harbourfront Canoe and Kayak Centre for a canoe trip to the Toronto Islands.  We had a great time!

We left first thing in the morning and took public transit.  When we got there we met our two guides, who taught us about canoeing and how to be safe. We got on our PFDs (personal flotation devices) and took our paddles that were the right length for us: reaching between our chin and nose when propped up on our shoe.  Then we went down to our canoes; one canoe was able to hold 12 people and the other was able to hold 18 people!

After everyone was ready, we launched and paddled into Lake Ontario!  We kind of had a race to the Toronto Islands. We had about a forty-five minute paddle and then we ate lunch on Centre Island next to Franklin’s Garden. After lunch, our teacher Dorona did an activity with everyone about water. We had a few minutes of silence and then we described what we saw. On our way back we quietly paddled through the Bird Sanctuary!  We saw swans, blue herons, ducks, geese, black-crowned night herons and a mink! We headed back to the base, then we took transit back to school.

The paddling was hard work.  Getting everyone to paddle together was not easy. We tried a few ways like chanting, choosing a leader and counting. Overall, the trip was a great experience and we were grateful to have gone.

Water Lily Art

To celebrate the new year with a "splash", Magen David students immersed themselves in an art project involving water and water themes. They learned about Monet's Water Lily paintings and then created their own 3D water lilies inspired by his work. Using colour diffusion, the children first drew on diffusion paper and coffee filters with washable markers. They then sprayed the paper with water and watched the brilliant colours merge together. After the paper dried they put together the finished product with beautiful results. Next up: the class has been learning about the fish as a symbol for Rosh Hashanah and are excited for an art project that celebrates this metaphor. Stay tuned for more!
MJDS Children's Gardens
Respect for and cultivation of the environment are two major areas of focus for MJDS, especially as we celebrate the Year of Water. The MJDS garden has always been a huge part of this, and thanks to the hard work of our students and volunteers, the garden has recently received a makeover and is looking gorgeous.

The students of MJDS have been involved in every aspect of this undertaking, from cleanup to planting, watering and maintenance, and designing and placing signs for the different sections and plants. We are happy to say the garden is in use more than ever, with classrooms drying and freezing herbs for use in cooking and Havdalah, using the lettuces in salad, and plans are in motion to harvest sunflower seeds as well.

We invite you to visit and take a moment to enjoy the sunflowers, or smell some herbs from the Havdalah section. If you would like to contribute to the continued health of this project, please join us for Garden Clean Up on Oct. 25 to maintain this beautiful aspect of our community.

Lovely weather and long weekends are coming up; here are 10 wonderful activities to do outdoors as a family.

MJDS wishes everyone Shana Tovah U'Metuka!
