Watch from AthleticDirectorU: Greg McGarity On Organizational Leadership
SBD/SBJ's Smith broke the the news yesterday of Learfield & IMG College working toward a merger of the two marketing firms. A significant development, to be sure. A combined company could offer up an interesting alternative to national broadcast & cable networks for sponsors who have a desire to market on campuses across the nation. A number of details remain, but Learfield Prez/CEO Brown will run the company with decision-making on the deal running all the way up to executive leaders at both Atairos & Silver Lake. The combined value of the two reported to be in the $2B range. Smith also added valuable context in todays' 1.Question interview below. More via the link, as well. (link)
Boomer Sooner: Tulsa World's Emig reports Oklahoma Prez Boren could announce his retirement as early as today, though OU Sr. Assoc. VP for Public Affairs Gilbert says rumblings are "inaccurate." Boren took over in Norman in November of 1994, hired AD Castiglione in April of 1998, pushed the university forward on all fronts & has been a major voice in the Big 12's alignment. (link); Still a long way to go, but the Norman City Council is reviewing a potential master development plan for University North Park that could include a new hoops arena for the Sooners. OU AD Castiglione "has indicated OU is 'absolutely interested' in becoming an anchor tenant of the new arena." (link); Contract details for new FB HC Riley were released, includes incentives for graduation percentage ($30K to $125K), as well as post-season bonuses (Big 12 championship = $75K, CFP appearance = $75K, more). (link)
Ohio State AD Smith says there's been on-going dialogue with former FB student-athlete Spielman on his issues with banners that hang in Buckeyes facilities showing former standouts alongside major corporate brands. Smith: "The filing of the lawsuit does not change our commitment to seeking a resolution of the banner issue." Spielman's attorney counters, "disappointed" with OSU trying to get the suit dismissed instead of "trying to resolve the underlying claim." (link)
The Wall Street Journal's Beaton goes in on the Ole Miss situation, indicates Rebels AD Bjork asked all FB staff members to disclose whether they had used "burner phones" during the recruiting process of prospective student-athletes. Beaton: "Of the 29 people who filled it out, the school says, none reported using a burner, prepaid or pay-as-you-go phone during their time at Ole Miss." Bjork: "Our coaching staff understands the scrutiny that we’ve been under. We wanted to be proactive and organized. There’s no indication of any other violations like that." (link)
Oregon AD Mullens Q&As, town hall style, alongside the Register-Guard. On engaging with Nike founder Knight, "I probably talk to Phil a lot more in the fall because I see him at football games. Absolutely I consult Phil on a lot of things. There’s nobody in my business who wouldn’t love to have that access. He always asks the right questions to make you think about things when you’re getting ready to make a decision." Mullens does not see any sport additions in the near future, compares his department to other headliners, "We don’t look like Texas. We don’t look like Ohio State. We don’t look like Michigan. But we’ve found a way through culture, through innovation, through creativity, to do it a little bit different and be able to compete with those folks." (link)
South Carolina boss Tanner pens to the Gamecocks fanbase, commits to improvements for FB's game atmosphere. Points to a water pressure issue that impacted last weekend's tilt with Kentucky that's been resolved, encourages usage of specialty concession kiosks to quicken lines, commits to monitoring the new in-house DJ & sound levels to create a more enjoyable experience. "Our goals are high. I want us to be the best at everything we do. When we don't reach our goals, it is disappointing. I promise you, we will work diligently to make your visit special to watch the Gamecocks play." (link)
Baseball & Women's LAX will be added to Akron's sport sponsorship portfolio come 2019-20. Interestingly, Prez Wilson & AD Williams point to scholarship funding coming from community sources, not the university. Williams provides context on the financial framework, "From a university standpoint, this approach is designed to be revenue positive after an initial start-up period. The university will look to external supporters for financial assistance for this initiative and we believe donors will step up and facilitate the addition of these two sports." (link)
Xavier AD Christopher is your new Chair of the Committee on Infractions, taking over for SEC Commish Sankey who completed his three-year stint. USC Special Advisor to the President Roberts is now Vice Chair. Christopher says he's committed to continuing the quickened pace of decision-making, which has improved over the last 12 to 18 months. (link); Accordingly, the COI announced a two-year show cause penalty for former USF MBB AC Oliver Antigua yesterday in connection to knowingly violating rules on housing, transportation, meals & transparency fronts. Former Bulls boss & current Illinois AC Orlando Antigua did not receive reprimand. Limited penalties handed down to the program. (link)
It's Personnel: BYU AD Holmoe announces promotions for Senior Assoc. AD Santiago up to Deputy AD & Assoc. AD/SWA Darger up to Senior Assoc. AD. (link); Binghamton AD Elliott bumps Senior Assoc. AD Kalina to Deputy AD. Elliott: "As we move toward enhancing our revenue opportunities through fundraising and marketing, Dennis will play a critical role in further developing those platforms." (link); New Hampshire AD Scarano makes a similar announcement, awards Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Danos with an advancement to Executive Director of Athletics. (link)
USA Today's Wolken continues to go hardline on FB leadership in the SEC, "The confluence of historically big money doled out to coaches at the same time the league’s power outside of Alabama is visibly eroding has turned the atmosphere in the SEC 'silly,' according to one person in the industry who monitors coaching searches closely and spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity.  […] Add it all up, and the SEC is arguably in the midst of its lowest point since 2002 when Georgia won the conference title over Arkansas, which was only in the championship game because Alabama, then coached by Dennis Franchione, was ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA violations." (link); Brett McMurphy reviews the SEC's 2018 FB schedule release, says the league has "mastered the best scheduling model in college football," as, "All 14 schools have seven home games and 10 of the 14 only play four true road games plus one neutral site game; compared to other Power 5 schools that play five or six true road games." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
You're a fundraiser & find Compliance boring. You're leading an Academics unit & think Marketing is trivial. Whatever the case may be, we all have natural areas of low interest or engagement, but if you want to ascend the ladder in college athletics, a thorough working knowledge of virtually all facets of a department is crucial. Author & scholar Oakley pens for HBR, "How to Get Excited About Topics That Bore You." 1) Find a seed a motivation (self improvement is a strong one); 2) Overcome the pain in the brain (turn off all distractions, set a length of time for focus, reward yourself when complete); 3) Realize it's perfectly normal to not understand something on your first try; and, 4) Build a collection of neural "chunks" (the power of daily engagement on a challenging subject). (link)

New Mexico AD Nunez and interim Prez Abdallah met with Lobo coaches yesterday to announce the expansion of drug and alcohol testing for student-athletes. UNM officials say the move is in no way related to a recent report claiming FB HC Davie is under investigation for student-athlete mistreatment and "allegations about the athlete drug-testing process being compromised." The new initiative will be implemented "over the next year" and will be independent from NCAA-mandated random drug testing, which will continue. The expected $20K tab for the new program will be picked up by main campus and the testing will be handled by an outside company, Aegis Sciences. Nunez: "Policies are ultimately about people. I am committed to improving our processes on all levels, but those that are most important are the ones that directly impact the well-being and success of our students." (link)
Former Louisville MBB student-athlete Eaves, now the MBB HC at Simmons (DIII) and a radio host, recently wrote a letter to Cards AD Jurich in which he criticized U of L for its lack of African-American coaches and administrators. A university report released last year found that 29 of the athletic department's 266 full-time employees (10.2%) were black, and another five were classified as multi-racial. Per Senior Assoc. AD/SID Klein, seven of U of L's 46 ACs are African-American, as are three of the 19 assistant and associate ADs below Jurich. In his letter, Eaves writes: "It appears the hiring practices by the athletic department have created a staggering proportion of under-representation of gifted and talented African-Americans at U of L. Does the University of Louisville treat minorities differently with respect to prudent access to ‘high-level employment’ resources compared to other groups of different race, color or ethnicity? I have additional concerns about whether favoritism is shown toward family members of some athletic department employees." In his response to Eaves, Jurich wrote: "I assure you that I will continue to closely monitor and support our measures to have a strong and diverse workforce in this department. We will quite simply continue to do our best." (link)
CBS Sports' Parrish criticizes the Pac-12 for Arizona's MBB schedule this year, which includes just one game against USC and UCLA, both of which will take place at home. Parrish writes: "Oh, I'm sure the Pac-12 has its reasons. And I'm sure somebody will try to explain those reasons in time by citing a system in place. But those people will be missing the point entirely. Because the point I'm making here is that there's never a good reason for a league to not have its best teams playing each other as often as possible on a year-to-year basis. In fact, every unbalanced league's scheduling policy should be as follows: Put the perceived best teams against each other as much as possible because it theoretically creates the maximum amount of interesting games." (link)
The City of San Diego is saying the 22-minute blackout during San Diego State’s FB game against Stanford this past weekend at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium was caused by human error and was not the result of a lighting malfunction. City Supervising Public Information Officer Collins: "Stadium staff had been testing the electronics Saturday morning. After the testing, the lights should have been switched into manual mode. However, they were put into auto mode instead, which has a nine-hour cycle. When that nine hours were up, the lights automatically shut off. Unfortunately, it was during the SDSU-Stanford game. The bulbs need to cool down before they can be switched back on, and that cool down process takes about 20 minutes." (link)
State attorney Cervone expects to have information in connection to the nine suspended Florida FB student-athletes by early next week. "Whatever they bring to me, we'll look at it and evaluate it as quickly as we can. It seems to be a garden-variety credit card fraud situation that we get all year long. I don't think there's anything exceptional here, other than maybe the people involved." No further comments from the university. (link)
Tech: SBJ's Fisher on Amazon's potential push into ticketing, via an anonymous source from a rival company, "I’m not sure anybody is necessarily running into their arms. The data question is definitely a big challenge. It’s also not clear to me what problem Amazon is fundamentally solving, and I think it’s still a high bar for them to clear." (link); Fox Sports will broadcast the Notre Dame-Michigan State FB matchup in social VR from the Skycam. Wendy's on-board as the sponsor. (link); The SEC has turned to Gubser & Schnakenberg LLC (GSC) for Baseball's new communication between the dugout & catcher's to call pitches & hopefully quicken the pace of games. GSC handles communication between HCs & QBs in the NFL. SEC Assoc. Commish Vincent in "wait and see" mode. (link); The Softball Rules Committee approves a deal with Diamond Kinetics that will add swing-tracking bat sensors. The data won't be available publicly yet. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
The Daily Press' Teel looks at the Old Dominion-Virginia Tech FB series, which starts this weekend. Monarchs' AD Selig: "Virginia Tech was the first (Power Five) program that we signed to a football series, and that’s a reflection of [former Hokies AD] Jim Weaver and how classy a gentleman he was. He talked to [former VT FB HC] Frank Beamer, and they said, 'You know, we can help Old Dominion out by scheduling them.' And obviously it was good for Virginia Tech because they recruit so heavily the 757 area. … That led to other series with other ACC schools, and I think it opened everyone’s eyes to the fact that OK, maybe we should look at scheduling ODU for a home-and-home series. That started it all for us, it really did." ODU FB HC Wilder leads his team to Blacksburg for its ninth game (0-8) versus a P5 opponent on Saturday, but says this time will be different as VT "is the best team we've ever played." (link)
Idaho boss Spear focused on continuing to provide resources to FB HC Petrino as he moves the Vandals forward after last year's 9-4 finish. Spear says he's interested in playing Boise State in the future, though with FB's coming move to the FCS ranks, which includes the elimination of 22 scholarships, "I don't know if the time is right to play that game." Also, sounds like plans for the new on-campus arena are coming along, "We are making great progress. We have tremendous momentum. We met with architects and contractors and we are really going to narrow in on a design." (link)
Monmouth FB is 2-0 this season in its newly renovated $16M Kessler Stadium. HC Callahan: "To see where we were back before we had the old stadium to where we are today with this beautiful facility means a lot." The venue, which seats upwards of 4,200, is also home to the T&F and LAX programs. (link); Today Kansas will ask its Board of Regents to approve a $12M facelift to Hogland Ballpark and the construction of a $10M volleyball center on campus. Hogland's upgrades will include 2K stadium seats, eight luxury boxes, 1K bleacher seats and 80 field-level seats along the left field line. Also in the plans is a new press box, new concourse and a revamp of the clubhouse to include a weight room, coaches offices and storage space. Volleyball facility would seat at least 3K. Meanwhile, Kansas State officials will take a renovation plan for T&F in Manhattan, pegged at $2.5M, before the board. (link)
Negotiations for the new stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders may be hitting some speed bumps with UNLV angling for the right relationship, though one inside source comments, "The casinos want this (Raider deal to get done), and the casinos get what they want." Another source, "Everyone wants the deal done, but they don't want UNLV to get muscled too badly." One coincidental connection in the whole process is UNLV AD Reed-Francois' background, which includes time with the Raiders as a Legal Associate. (link)
More from Around Higher Ed: In light of the $300M in higher ed cuts from the state budget potentially faced by UConn, WBB HC Auriemma narrated a video that the school promoted via Twitter. His comments, in part: "I walk on campus now. I walk there every day and now I listen and I say, man, I hope our basketball program can continue to be as good as our university has become." (link); Newly named Virginia Prez Ryan's contract is for seven years, $750K base annually with a re-evaluation clause every two years based on "an unspecified market analysis." Car and moving allowance, signing money, club and professional membership dues and housing also part of the package. (link); Northern Illinois wants to delay its search for a new president by a year, but aims to have a new leader in place by July 1, 2019. In the meantime, Acting Prez Freeman will continue in her role, though she has no plans to seek the permanent post. (link); Eight semifinalists for the open Iowa State Prez post will interview next week, with hopes of finalists coming to campus October 5-10. (link); Northern Colorado Prez Norton announced her plans to retire last week. The Board of Trustees aims to have her replacement announced by April 2018, will use a search firm, though not chosen yet. (link)
Also Noticed: Nebraska Chancellor Green on AD Eichorst's comments after last Saturday's FB loss to Northern Illinois, "Shawn's his own leader. He's a very effective leader. That was his choice, I think a wise choice on his part." (link); Wyoming AD Burman one of 13 FBS ADs invited to the CFP mock selection process, which will evaluate teams from the 2012 season. (link); Notre Dame and Teamworks do a deal. (link); Check out Arkansas' fly-through animation of the new Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, currently under construction. (link); Behind Law360's paywall, but here is your teaser: "A class of student-athletes in multidistrict litigation against the NCAA over head injuries blasted a fee request from attorneys for the lead objector to their $75 million settlement on Friday, telling an Illinois federal court that the changes secured aren’t worth the $6 million the attorneys want. The class filed a response to the fee request made in January by Edelson PC, which represents lead objector and former San Diego State football player Anthony Nichols. The student-athletes argued that Nichols claims to have added $50 million... " (link); Saturday's Kentucky-Florida game at Kroger Field is officially a sellout. (link); SBD's Karp: "Script change for weekend college football numbers. ABC's Clemson-Louisville with 5.1 million viewers outdrew Fox' 4.9 million for Texas-USC." (link); KORE Software with a major feature expansion to their Sponsorship & Partner Engagement application, KORE KONNECT, which will be available to subscribers by Q4 of this year. (link); T-Mobile and Sprint "are in active talks" about a merger, not for the first time, but "This time, given the all-stock nature contemplated, Softbank would emerge as a large minority holder in any combination. While T-Mobile CEO John Legere is expected to lead any combination that results from a merger, [Softbank's CEO] Son has made it clear he wants a say in how the company is run. That desire adds another layer of complexity to an already difficult transaction." Antitrust limitations still unclear as the companies rank third and fourth in the country for wireless carriers.
