On the tenth anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the fight for indigenous rights is still a daily struggle. Indigenous communities all over the world are organizing, often risking their lives.
A prime example is the Shipibo community of Uchunya in the central Peruvian Amazon. Their territories are coveted by violent land thieves who want to sell them to oil palm corporations or drug traffickers. Those same criminals are the presumed killers behind a massacre of six campesinos on September 1st, right in Uchunya's back yard.
Shipibo leader and long-time Amazon Watch partner Robert Guimaraes told us the killings could have been carried out against Uchunya instead. If Peruvian authorities don't take concrete measures soon, the community could easily be next.
In the face of this terrifying violence and years of threats, the community continues to insist on their rights. They are pressing national authorities to come to the region and implement measures to protect their lives and the environment.
Show your solidarity with the community by sending a strong message to authorities saying you support their just demands.
