Dear Friends:

I just returned from my one week residence in Groningen, Netherlands at the Prince Claus Conservatory (the PCC, as they say there).  I had forgotten how exhausting and electrifying teaching can be.  It's like being thrown in with the lions and see how you fair.  The may devour you, or worse, all go to sleep completely indifferent and bored.  Best is to get those lions up on their hind legs and point their inquiring minds in a direction and interact.  Thankfully, it was a really high level of students there, both as people and aspiring artists.

For my part, I found myself re-examining my own quality as a jazz musician and thinker.  Under the spotlight of "here's what I got", it can be harrowing.  I found that was best to be as honest as possible, rather than just giving a concept, to simply described my own experience by playing and talking.  The students had some observations about my harmonies and material and also inquired into my own taste and why I made the choices that I did when I played - and some actually seemed to like it!  This gave me the opportunity to share my own experience as a jazz student in a conservatory and what I've learned up to now and hopefully sharing something they could find valuable.  By the end of the week I felt a familial connection to the students and, although really bushed, was glad for the experience.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the clubs if you can make it by.  Please check out our upcoming shows this week.

Regards,

Spike
