7 Ways of Learning Outside of School--How to Counter Rote School Learning

Hi,

I hope all is well on your end. I want to share "7 Ways of Learning Outside of School--How to Counter Rote School Learning" I would love to hear your feedback. So do hit the Email Reply Button for feedback--comments & questions.

I read every one of my emails.

1) Discussions, our studies, observations, and other things we learn, we should go about the work of sharing it with people in our community.

We can do it through volunteering to work with youth, starting study groups, making newsletters, gathering emails to send knowledge to people, writing poetry, songs, dance, plays, films, helping youth with homework, and many other things.

These discussions are powerful, much info from everyone contributing.

Now, lets all hit the highways and the byways, and spread this knowledge, enlightening our people, in every way we can.

2) Don't raise your children on a bunch of hyped up unreal crap.

Nothing is better than being real with them. It helps them to deal with reality better. Hype ain't bout nothing. It's exciting. It makes you happy. It gives you something to be motivated about. But it ain't real.

In the end, you don't do anything but waste a lot of hyped up time.

My father used to say, "the shortest distance between two points/ is a straight line/--truth."

3) Technology's Role In Community Self-Knowledge

Everyone must get involved in the work---Churches, people with trades and other skills, history, and other things.

We are powerful when we apply ourselves, and be about the work. All of us have something we can contribute.

Knowledge is power.

A lot of people got email on their phones & internet. We should even start doing electronic newsletters, audio blogs, and other things spreading knowledge. We do not have to have a degree, be in a fraternity or sorority or go to church, as long as we want to change in our lives for the better, and be about the work.

4) Education, in many ways is a mess.

Education, in many ways is a mess. I am not saying there are not some great teachers out there. There are many great teachers. There are some too that are not putting their all into teaching. Yes, there is a class overcrowding. yes, the pay is not as it should be. Yes, testing is pushed like it is the most important thing in the world.

There are many things negative about the state of education. In many ways, we got to look back to move forward. Many things worked in the past in education. For some reason, the basics in education is pushed to the backburner. For instance, reading, mass reading skills is pushed forward, but Grammar is not pushed equally hard.
------
5) Teachers hands are tied in many ways to go by state standards point for point.

If they stray from that, they put themselves in a bind with administration because paperwork has to be turned in for review for funding.

Creative teaching techniques can not be documented for funding, so that is not encouraged by administration. Time is short. So, teachers are forced to go straight by the book to show they have covered point for point on the state standards. Most of the educational techniques are rote learning. Then, we wonder why education is in such a terrible state.

7) Lets make an all out effort to raise the Reading level of our Youth.

Speed reading is fine. Reading with a cadence or rhythm is fine. Reading with voice inflection is fine. But, we have to make sure the children are comprehending what they are reading. It is good if you/adults read the stories before the children.

After the children read the stories, quiz them. Have discussions with them about the stories. Ask them about the characters & the action in the stories. Ask them what they would have done in certain situations.

Make the reading a fun event.
