Presidents Report
Dear Westgaters, this weekend, we will have our meeting, as usual, on the third Sunday of the month. Vicbrew is also on. There was to be a talk on hops this month, but we will postpone that and have a nice afternoon at the club. Or at Vicbrew. It’s your choice. Grant will open as per usual.
Speaking of Vicbrew, Westgate had close to 113 entries, which put us in the highest number of entries for a club. Well done. I’m proud of all who entered. As to whether we will win the perpetual Scott Vernon trophy, I can’t say, as I don't know. I do know that there were 12 entries from our house, 11 from Neal’s and 20 from John Kingston. The rest was from you. Our Club. Good luck to all that entered, and on a personal note, it’s excellent to see that level of support for Vicbrew, especially when we are half of Merri Mashers size and probably smaller than Bayside.
Next months competition is for Bock. I did bring a sample of my Helles/Maibock to last months meeting and it was drunk, with not much comment. Maybe, if you try something at the bar, and you like it, seek out the brewer. Give some feedback. After all, it's what being part of a club is all about.
Hopefully all the Dads, at the club had a good fathers day and took advantage of the sale at Grain and Grape. I personally have just added in-line oxygenation from my plate chiller, with some gear I bought. As Riggers said "Well you’ve bloody got everything that opens and closes now"
The advantage of this new system is that, I’m oxygenating the wort, straight out of my plate chiller, into a silicon hose that goes straight to my fermenter. There is no way that any crud can blow into the fermenter during transfer as it’s fully sealed. I underlet, through the bottom tap and use a long line of hose, out my fermenter lid, into a glass jug of sanitiser. The positive pressure means there are bubbles in the jug. This confirms transfer is happening.
The November comp is fruit beer and then we hit Christmas. Please be advised that the Christmas party is the first Saturday of the month. At the club hall. We will soon turn our attention to it. We will do our usual Christmas lunch but will need kegs. So those that brew a lot, think about putting a keg of QUALITY beer aside for Christmas. As usual, there will be a jumping Castle (which we probably have to get onto, seeing some clown tried to burn down 7 of his competitors, out here in the West, a few months ago).
Grant has been in touch with the Naval Association about the crack in the wall. As the hall is owned by Maribyrnong Council but built with Dept. of Veterans Affairs money, it's a tricky situation. I personally know of one councillor, who may be not on our side, in regards to spending money to repair the hall that we use. We await a reply.
We welcomed along a new member in Dawn Van Bruchem, who not only sat in and judged but scored a second place in last months comp. Gee, a few of you newer members are giving us old guard a run for our money! I, of course, am no longer the bridesmaid (a position I held for quite a few years) I got beaten to third, on count back, by Grant. Bugger. Well done to Neal and Grant and to all that entered. BOTY its early days. It’s still anyones.....
I won’t be there Sunday (I will be at Vicbrew)
Goodluck to all that entered!
Cheers
Ferg
