We welcome guests!
Hurricane Irma—the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded—barreled across Florida after devastating parts of the Caribbean, leaving significant damage similar to what Hurricane Harvey inflicted. We know that long after the initial clean-up, real recovery can take months or years. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) stands with its congregations which have been impacted by natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The UUA has established a Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund to assist congregations in repairing any damage, and to respond to the needs of their members' and their community's efforts to get back on its feet.

UUA staff is working closely with leaders in the Association's Southern Region, to ascertain where the need is greatest and distribute funds efficiently.
To donate to the Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund, please click here.
You may also direct checks to UUA Gift Processing, 24 Farnsworth St Fl 3, Boston, MA 02210; please make your check payable to the UUA with "Irma Recovery Fund" on the memo line. Follow along on UUA social media to stay up to date as the situation develops.
We are heartened by the generous response we have already received for Hurricane Harvey Recovery. Contributions to the Harvey Recovery Fund can still be made at giving.uua.org/harvey-floods.

LOVE NOTES CONCERT

Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 7pm in Henriksen Hall

Do you love to hear Terri Masters sing?
How about a duet with Caitlin about love triangles?
Have you heard Robin Paterson play a beautiful piece on the grand piano?
How about the dulcet tones of our own master tenor Abraham Cervantes?
Severin on the 88?
Gary on the 6-string?
The master voice of Dee as the master of ceremonies? (Masters - get it?)

Well, have I got a deal for you...

The LOVE NOTES concert will be here on Saturday, September 30th at 7pm.

A huge thanks to all of you who bid on this at the last auction.  You are all set.
If you did not get a chance to bid on this at the auction, additional tickets ($20) are available in the PUC Office, or see Teri Masters.

Want to Learn More About Our Church?

Register to attend two information sessions, New UU 1 and New UU 2, on two Sundays, October 1 and 8, at 12:30 pm in the Voyagers’ Room.  The minister and Connections/Membership leaders will meet with you to get to know you better, to inform you of our UU history and how you might become a member of our congregation.  The sessions are different, so attendance at both is best.  You can sign up at the Welcome Table on the patio or email Judi Carter at judicarter@hotmail.com.  We hope to see you there.

We Need Your Photo

If you haven't had your photo taken for our directory, please see
the office volunteer as soon as possible.

THANKS!!

News from Debenneville Pines

All summer long we have quietly been raising money to add a new water tank at Camp de Benneville Pines. Now we need your help to keep the water flowing. Contribute today and your dollars will be matched.

Why do we need a new tank? Our 55 year-old tank is just not cutting it in 2017. It’s not big enough. It’s not up to earthquake standards. And it’s not even accessible for firefighting, which has proven a problem.

This summer there have been three fires on our mountain: one up in Big Bear and two down the hill. While they were contained without the need for evacuation, they serve as an important reminder that we need to be fully prepared to fight a fire at Camp if and when the time comes.

More than 160 donors from 20 UU congregations, have already stepped up to help secure our water storage future and we are pretty close to our goal. But we need your help to finish the job!

And right now, generous donors from First UU Church of San Diego are matching every donation you make.
Please contribute online today. It's easy and secure. You can use your credit card or donate straight from your bank account.
And every penny you contribute will be matched!
Thanks so much for your help in continuing to improve the camp you love.
From the mountaintop!
Janet James, Executive Director

Environmental Priorities Network's Fall Forum
Saturday, November 4
9:00 am to 1:30 pm
St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church
Rolling Hills Estates

Environmental Priorities Network’s (EPN) Fall Forum is titled Our Solar Powered Future is Here and  How You Can Take Part. The media is filled with human-interest footage of the storm named Harvey. Naomi Klein in her Intercept article posted Monday, says she has a message for the media, “Talk About Climate Change . . . The records being broken year after year — whether for drought, storm surges, wildfires, or just heat — are happening because the planet is markedly warmer than it has been since record-keeping began.” Climate scientist Dr. Jim Hansen on the Democracy Now show today says, “The question people are asking is what is the impact of humans on this hurricane?  And there are substantial impacts on sea level, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere therefore the amount of rainfall and on the strength of storms.  Humans are already impacting all of those . .. .”

The upcoming EPN forum is the appropriate conversation.  The Forum will be held on Saturday, November 4 at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Rolling Hills Estates 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.  Please save the date.

 Intercultural Transformation Workshop

When: Saturday, September 30, 2017 | 9-4
Where: Pacific Unitarian Universalist Church, 5621 Montemalaga Dr, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275
Cost: $20 per person (scholarship available upon request to jkwong@uua.org), includes continental breakfast and lunch

Abstract:
Our world is becoming more multicultural, yet according to The Pew Research Center, 78% of Unitarian Universalists still identify as White or Euro-American and 53% are considered upper middle class. How can we move toward a more inclusive and diverse Beloved Community more reflective of the community we find ourselves in? How can we cross cultural barriers without creating World War III or be left feeling guilt and shame? How can we frame this sacred work theologically grounded in our Principles and rich faith tradition?

Join The Rev. Dr. Jonipher Kupono Kwong and The Rev. Tera Klein in exploring culture defined broadly by increasing both our intercultural competency and humility. Learn some tools and exercises to communicate across culture and handle conflict cross-culturally when (not if) it arises.

Playing in the Sage
“Mathematics expresses values that reflect the cosmos, including orderliness, balance, harmony, logic, and abstract beauty.”
---Deepak Chopra

“Early Learning” is nothing new.
It was there with the children living in caves, or following their clans or tribes across deserts and plains…no flash cards…no worksheets, just rocks, shells, and sticks.

Children free to manipulate the natural materials in their environment begin on their own to explore and understand complex concepts. They seem to innately want to represent those values of order, balance, harmony and logic. The big friends talk with the little friends about their ideas to learn about their thinking.

As I thumb through catalogs of “early learning” materials, I wonder (and worry) where are the sticks and stones?

Warmly,
Sylvia
