A Message from Our Principal
Wow! What an interesting first few weeks of school. With staffing changes, hot weather and bad air it really took a group effort to make sure things were as smooth as they could be. Thank you for your help!
I’d like to introduce Ms. Shannon Fast as our new counselor. Shannon started on Monday of this week, she and Mrs. Tofel will be working to determine which grades they will be supporting and we will get that information to you as soon as we can. This is Shannon’s first year as a school counselor, she is currently completing her master’s degree in school counseling through Oregon State University. We are excited to have Shannon with us!
Next Wednesday September 20th will be our first late opening of the year. School will not start until 10:45 and the first bell will ring at 10:35. During late openings this year Alameda staff will continue to engage in professional development on best practice for culturally responsive teaching.
Boundary Change Information
I have received e-mails and had conversations with several of you about the proposed boundary changes for North East Portland. The goal of these changes is twofold. First, PPS needs to establish a feeder pattern for two new middle schools set to open in the fall of 2018. Second, the District needs to work to “right size” under enrolled and over enrolled schools. The priority though is to create the feeder pattern for Tubman and Roseway Heights Middle Schools.
The PPS Enrollment and Transfer Department link is here: https://www.pps.net/Page/1013
The middle school planning website is here: https://www.pps.net/Page/10776 These sites will be updated throughout this process. There will also be several Board listening sessions and I know they want to hear parent voice.
A Few Reminders Please
- Arrangements for going home with friends after school must be made in advance of the planned activity. As much as we would like to accommodate students making last minute arrangements, we are unable to do so.
- If your child(ren)attends an after-school class and will be absent from that class, please contact the organization running that program to let them know. They have no way of knowing if kids are absent from school.
- The best time to call teachers is before school from 8:15 a.m. to 8:35 a.m., or after 3:15 p.m. Please note: Teachers are busy with instruction of students during the school day and will not be able to receive phone calls. If you call the office during the school day we can get a message to your child or the teacher but we will refrain from having the phone ring in the classroom.
- Students should not arrive at school prior to 8:30 a.m. There is no early morning supervision on the playground. We are very concerned about the safety of your child(ren) coming to and from school. We are requesting your assistance in making sure children arrive at school at the specified time. We are reminding bus riders in grades k-3 to go wait at either of the entry doors on NE 27th and for 4th-5th grader bus riders to wait outside their respective entry doors leading to the playground.

Nutrition Services at Alameda
School Lunch Accounts
Welcome back, I hope everyone had a great summer. New this year we are not using ‘myschoolbucks.com’ any more, the new site is SchoolCafe.com. You will need to go into the site and set up your child account like you did for school bucks, and you will need your student's ID#. You should have recieved a newsletter from the District (like shown at right) with that information. If you did no or you have misplaced it and need assistance finding your child's ID# please e-mail me.
Also like years passed if you want your child to have a second meal they will need to bring a note from you to do that, 1St meal is $2.80, second meal is $3.30.
Thank you,
Darlene

Passport Club
First check is next week!
The first check of the 2017-2018 school year is coming up on September 22! All of Alameda's 2nd-5th graders are encouraged to participate. The study map for this month was sent home in students' back packs. If you didn't receive one, extra copies are available in the school lobby.
We could also use a little help from our families! Please consider volunteering for the Passport Club. It runs from 8:45 am - 11:00 am in the cafetorium and it’s a really fun way to interact with Alameda's awesome kids. We have a blast -- and you can bring a bell or other noisemaker if you have one to celebrate "level 5" with style. Please do not let your lack of geography knowledge hold you back from volunteering. Volunteers get to have a cheat sheet with them at all times!
If you can help, please sign up online.

The Alameda Dyslexia Community is having its first meeting of the school year
Thursday, Sept 21st 7-8.30 PM in the Alameda Library
The Alameda Dyslexia Community is a collection of families of students with dyslexia. We invite other families with students with dyslexia to join us as we continue to create and build this community. We acknowledge that Alameda’s one-on-one support of students with dyslexia is critically important, but that greater awareness, communication and support is needed.
We will continue discussing the implementation of the recent legislation, create a proposal for Dyslexia Awareness Month and plan the calendar for the 2017-18 school year.
Together we will define what is needed for our unique community and determine how best to provide for those needs in partnership with the Alameda administration and teachers as well as Portland Public Schools (PPS).
Our meetings will be open to adults and kids and will be hosted by Marty Stockton and Stacey Katz.
