HCC and the Caribbean Development Bank Join Forces to Tackle Childhood Obesity in the Region

CDB Approves Grant to Address Childhood Obesity Prevention
The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has approved a grant of USD150,000 to the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), to support capacity building to address childhood obesity prevention in four countries. The project will strengthen the ability of civil society organisations (CSOs) in The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize and Jamaica to contribute to non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and control, with specific focus on childhood obesity programmes.

The organisations who will benefit from the grant are:
  • The Cancer Society of The Bahamas
  • The Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Foundation of Barbados
  • The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados
  • The Belize Cancer Society
  • The Heart Foundation of Jamaica
The grant agreement was signed at CDB headquarters in Barbados on Monday, September 18, 2017, by Sir Trevor Hassell, Patron of the HCC and CDB’s Vice-President (Operations), Ms. Monica La Bennett.

“Childhood obesity is associated with a wide range of health complications and an increased risk of premature onset of illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease. Preventing childhood obesity is a key strategy for reducing the incidences of NCDs in the Caribbean. These illnesses create an economic burden for countries in the region, and may also result in loss of income, contracted labour markets, as well as increased economic dependence within households,” said Ms. La Bennett.

“Childhood obesity is a global epidemic from which the Caribbean has not been spared and its prevention has to be one of the pressing public health problems of our time. The protection of the health of the child is one of its basic rights and obesity is an indication of the infringement of those rights. I believe that the HCC is ideally positioned to mobilize the stakeholders that are critical to the success of what will be a protracted effort. I believe that this grant is a clear indication that CDB appreciates the economic dimensions of the problem. I trust that this is the beginning of a very fruitful partnership,” said Sir Trevor Hassell.

Heart Foundation of Jamaica and Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control Submit Comments on Tobacco Control Laws to Parliament Committee

The JCTC and the HFJ
The JCTC and the HFJ were asked to submit to the Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD) Committee of  Parliament, our comments on the status of tobacco control laws in Jamaica and the public health issues arising from tobacco and ganja use, based on a private Member’s Motion placed Member of Parliament for Kingston Central Ronald Thwaites, Chairman of the HRSD, in July 2017.

Further to our submission, we were asked to present to the Committee on September 6, 2017. The other organizations presenting were the National Council on Drug Abuse and the Jamaica Cancer Society. We applaud Rev. Thwaites for keeping the issue of further implementation of the FCTC on the front burner.

We are heartened by the comments of the Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton in response  to the private member's motion brought by Ronald Thwaites on public health issues arising from tobacco and ganja use, Dr  Tufton stated  that a comprehensive Tobacco Control Bill has been developed and is under review. He said the comprehensive tobacco control  legislation seeks to address critical matters which have not been addressed under the existing Tobacco Control Regulations and a Cabinet Submission for a tobacco control Bill will be submitted shortly.

WHO Launches New NCDs Progress Monitor

Noncommunicable Diseases Progress Monitor 2017
Governments are making limited progress, so more action is needed to address NCDs and main risk factors to meet global targets to reduce premature deaths.
Noncommunicable Diseases Progress Monitor 2017
Governments must step up efforts to control noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) to meet globally agreed targets, including preventing the premature deaths of millions of people from these conditions, according to a new WHO report released today.

Limited national progress has been made in the fight against NCDs – primarily cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, cancers and diabetes – which are the world’s biggest killers, and claim the lives of 15 million people aged 30 to 70 years annually.
But the WHO Noncommunicable disease Progress Monitor 2017, which charts actions by countries to set targets, implement policies to address four main shared and modifiable NCD risk factors (tobacco, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol) and build capacities to reduce and treat NCDs, shows that progress around the world has been uneven and insufficient.

WHO Statement on Philip Morris funded Foundation for a Smoke-Free World

On 13 September 2017, tobacco company Philip Morris International (PMI) announced its support for the establishment of a new entity - the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World.
PMI indicated that it expects to support the Foundation by contributing approximately USD 80 million annually over the next 12 years.

The UN General Assembly has recognized a “fundamental conflict of interest between the tobacco industry and public health.” (1) WHO Member States have stated that “WHO does not engage with the tobacco industry or non-State actors that work to further the interests of the tobacco industry”, (2) the Organization will therefore not engage with this new Foundation.

Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) obliges Parties to act to protect public health policies from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry in accordance with national law.

How Big Business Got Brazil Hooked on Junk Food

How Big Business Got Brazil Hooked on Junk Food
As growth slows in wealthy countries, Western food companies are aggressively expanding in developing nations, contributing to obesity and health problems.

Brazil - Children’s squeals rang through the muggy morning air as a woman pushed a gleaming white cart along pitted, trash-strewn streets. She was making deliveries to some of the poorest households in this seaside city, bringing pudding, cookies and other packaged foods to the customers on her sales route. Celene da Silva, 29, is one of thousands of door-to-door vendors for Nestlé, helping the world’s largest packaged food conglomerate expand its reach into a quarter-million households in Brazil’s farthest-flung corners.

As she dropped off variety packs of Chandelle pudding, Kit-Kats and Mucilon infant cereal, there was something striking about her customers: Many were visibly overweight, even small children.
