Access To Information Day: 28 September 2017

Today we celebrate the second international Day for Access to Information. At the General Assembly in September 2015, the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted Agenda 2030, formulated to guide global and national development policies for the next 15 years. Agenda 2030 includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, each with multiple specific targets. Among these targets is SDG 16.10, which obliges signatory countries to ‘ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements’.

The 2017 hurricane season has been one of the worst in the Caribbean so far. With three major hurricanes devastating the islands in just a fortnight, most affected areas were left without power, flooded, and in need of essential services. The ACM's aim is to help journalists in the affected areas report their experiences, as well as help raise awareness about the devastation and help restore and give equipment to the media workers on the islands that were in the hurricanes' path.

Citizens' Analysis of Government Openness: MISA Launches Its 2017 Transparency Assessment 

 
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) launched its annual Transparency Assessment, commemorating the International Day of Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) on September 28th. The Assessment shows how accessible public information is in the eight countries that participated in the research (Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

5th Gabo Festival starts in Colombia

The festival will give out the Gabriel García Márquez journalism prize for the fifth time. The festival will boast many exhibitions, lectures and film projections on a number of beautiful locations in  Medellín, Colombia. And of course, a marathon of the best news stories from Latin America in the previous year. The winner of the award is announced at the beginning of the festival, on September 28th.
