Return to School

On August 14, we had our first day of school and on September 7, we had our second "first day" of school after Harvey devastated Houston. Despite the storm, students are showing spirit for their schools and communities and we continue to make great strides toward jaw-dropping results. With your help, we've now raised over $2.5 million for our Family Flood Relief Fund. We are continually awed by and grateful for the support. Keep spreading the word and take advantage of the new opportunity to purchase a T-shirt with the popular "hoUSton" graphic designed by Kintigo. When you purchase a $20 tee, you will be making a $15 contribution to the YES Prep Family Flood Relief Fund.

Because of the storm, we held our August issue to focus on recovery and are now releasing this as a double issue to honor all that went into launching schools two times.

YES Prep Southwest alumnus, José Abraham Garcia, is a student leader for the University of Houston's Urban Experience Program, mentoring students who struggle with the transition to college. Read more.

PATHWAYS TO OPPORTUNITY

IMPACT Institute

YES Prep hosted the IMPACT Institute, inviting representatives from 22 highly selective colleges and universities to meet with students and their families. The IMPACT program boosts college persistence for YES Prep students and garners national attention.

Teachers in Shelters

YES Prep's Director of Literacy Interventions, Simone Kern, founded the organization, Teachers Volunteering in Shelters, a group of over 1,600 certified teachers that provided lessons, activities, and childcare for families displaced by Harvey. Read more in The74 and in The Chronicle.

YES Prep & KIPP will host our annual College Fair for over 3,000 students on October 12 at NRG Park.
Cheer on YES Prep cross country teams on October 14 from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Willow Waterhole and middle school volleyball teams on October 27 at 3:30 p.m. and all day October 28 at YES Prep Southside.
Join us for ACE X ACE, a carnival celebrating Afterschool Centers on Education, on October 14 at YES Prep North Central.
Celebrate 20 years of leading Houston forward at our Legacy Luncheon on Friday, November 17 at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
