The International Colloquium on Black Males in Education (ICBME) Planning Committee congratulates the incredible achievements of Dr. Shaun R. Harper, a former ICBME keynote speaker. Dr. Harper recently left his position as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, and the departments of Africana Studies and Gender Studies, in order to establish the University of Southern California (USC) Race & Equity Center.

Dr. Harper will serve as executive director for the new center, and will continue his valuable research on race and education in the United States. In total, Dr. Harper has conducted more than 40 on-campus climate studies across the country in an effort to understand racial tensions on college campuses. He has published 12 books and more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. Click here to learn more about his service.

Last year, the Colloquium was honored to host Dr. Harper as a keynote speaker at ICBME 2016, which was held in Bermuda. Dr. Harper’s keynote was titled “Advancing Black Male Student Success from High School through Higher Education,” in which he discussed the need for broader and more comprehensive research studies on Black men and boys in education.

"As we write and publish in his name, we must do it differently. We must do it with a stronger sense of purpose. We must do it with a higher degree of activism. We have to do what Black boys and men need us to do,” Dr. Harper said at the Colloquium.

In his keynote speech, he urged participants at the Colloquium to “write for change” and conduct research that will improve the educational opportunities and experiences of Black men. His keynote presentation and long-term commitment to research continue to be an inspiration, and we wish him the best of luck in his new position at USC. Watch the rest of his keynote speech on YouTube here.

The Sixth Annual Colloquium will be held on October 3-6, 2017 in Toronto, Canada. #ICBME17 will be focused around the theme “The Black Male Mosaic: Unpacking Divergent Experiences in Global Education.”

Proposals are currently being accepted and are due Monday, July 10, 2017. Click here for more information
