October 3, 2017

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

As I woke up to the news on Monday morning, I am sure I experienced the same emotions as many of you – shock, anger, sadness, disbelief, and the need for prayer.  Since we have started school, our country has endured quite the caliber of disasters, both natural and human.  It can be overwhelming for us as adults to deal with tragedies such as this and trying to explain it to our children is even more challenging. The way in which we address these issues with children are important.  I am including some resources for talking about events such as these with your children.

http://neatoday.org/2017/10/02/mass-shooting-las-vegas-talk-students/

As always, we will be vigilant about monitoring conversations at school and alerting you if your child seems to be having difficulty with any of these events.  May we all keep the victims, families, and community of Las Vegas in our prayers.

Connecting with each other in person is always a great way to build a sense of hope in our community and our upcoming conferences could not be more timely.  Tomorrow marks the midterm of our first trimester.  On October 18, 19, and 20 we have noon dismissals with conferences in the afternoon.  Grades Kindergarten through five, please look for a SignUp Genius from your child(ren)’s teacher after 3:00.  Middle school families will receive an email as well, but not through SignUp Genius as the conference structure is different in grades six, seven, and eight.  Please note that on October 20th, we also have a 9:30 start. It is an important time to review mid-trimester progress and discuss your child’s individual learning.  I am surprised by the number of pre-planned absence forms I am receiving for these days.  Please note that these are school days and if you are planning to be absent from school, teachers may not be able to provide alternative conference times or provide your child's work prior to the absence.  I would like to thank our teachers in advance for all of the work they put into preparing for conferences.

Last week I mentioned the importance and challenge of taking time to bask in the joyful moments.  I would like to share a few joyful moments I have experienced in the last week:
  • The eighth graders calling out words of encouragement to each other as they navigated the high ropes course!
  • The KA students saying good morning to me every day as they pass by my office at 8:30!
  • The 2A class discussion on what it means to be an effective communicator - one of our Student Learning Expectations!
  • The high fives I get from two fifth graders every day as they leave at 3:00!
  • The third graders sharing their knowledge about crayfish with the Pre-K students!
  • The Student Leadership Team spending their recess taking down our second monthly free dress food drive donations - and there were a lot! - to the parish food bank!
These are the types of joyful moments that occur every day at ASB.  These are the types of joyful moments that show us how our children are the hope and light for our world.

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Basketball News:
At the conclusion of the 2016-2017 basketball season Scott Summers turned in his whistle as the ASB School Basketball Coordinator.  It will be difficult to replace Scott, and I can not begin to express my gratitude for all of his help and leadership in this role over the last 6 years.  After consulting with Scott and a few interested candidates, I am happy to announce that James Conklin (father of Max, 8th grade and Jules, 5th grade) has accepted the position of basketball coordinator.  James has an excellent mind for sports, is an excellent communicator.  I am  confident our program will transition successfully with James' guidance.
Registration for the 2017-2018 CYO basketball season is now open!!
Boys and girls in grades 4 – 8 are eligible to participate.

Basketball Assessments for Middle School Students
In middle school, basketball teams are split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. This requires an assessment process that allows assessors to determine the best fit for each player.  Assessments will be held on Tuesday, October 17, and Wednesday, October 18 and Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24.  In order to be eligible for the varsity team, students need to attend at least one of the assessment nights, and two would be preferred.  The assessors will be looking at a wide variety of the skills including, ball handling, passing, shooting and court awareness.  This process is designed to place each student on the team that will allow them to have the most success during the basketball season and we strive to create an environment that is low stress and lots of fun. Parents and coaches are not allowed in the gym to watch the assessments.  Please see our Athletic Handbook here regarding assessments and policies on page 12.

I am happy to announce the hiring of some new staff members at ASB Extended Care.  I look forward to working with each of these individuals and for all of our families to meet and get to know our new staff members.

Ava Pecora is a sophomore at the University of Washington, and has spent the last two summers as a camp counselor at Rowland Hall SummerWorks in Salt Lake City, UT and has served as an 8th grade tutor in a variety of subject areas over the last two years.

Kerry Beck comes to us highly recommended from a number of ASB families that knew her as the assistant director of the after school program at Bryant School.  I look forward to adding Kerry's experience in before and after school programs to our Extended Care team.

Autumn Derr is a sophomore at the University of Washington, and spent the last summer in California and a counselor at Kidz Kamp.  She has also served as a swim instructor at Steve Wallen Swim School in El Dorado Hills CA.

Abby Gustafson is a pre-nursing student at the University of Washington and a graduate of Shorewood High School in Shoreline. Abby has a great deal of experience as a nanny and in various roles of customer service.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with each of these new members of our staff.  We are also lucky enough to have long time employees Mack Kelly and Jenny Van de Putte returning this year to help guide our new employees and round out our Extended Care team.

ASB School is closed on Friday, October 6, 2017, for an Archdiocesan In-Service. There will be no Extended Care available on this day as ASB School will be closed and all employees will attending the in-service.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have not yet registered your child(ren) for Extended Care, it is never too late.  We will be accepting registration forms throughout the school year, so families that are still trying to figure out their childcare needs have all the time that they need to get things situated.  Please do not hesitate to contact Dylan Pouley if you have any questions or need to make inquiries about our program.

If you have any questions about Extended Care, do not hesitate to contact me, I am happy to assist in whatever way that I can.

Thank you,
Dylan Pouley
