Blessing of the Animals
Plan on bringing your two legged, and four legged friends to church. Friends will have the opportunity to get a post church overview of Unitarian-Universalism in general after church at our first New UU Class.

The contribution of an autistic person to our collective comprehension, comfort, and honoring of our fellow creatures
We have all heard the expression “Your body is a temple.” Today, like Dr. Seuss’s Lorax suggests, we speak for those who have no voice. Well, not exactly. Lifting up the insights of insights of autistic author and animal behavior expert Temple Grandin we try to bridge the gap a bit between how we and the animals we love and or eat experience the world. The service includes an animal blessing.

Notes from PUC's Emerging Pastoral Care Team
Jim Michaels is still recovering from hip surgery, and expected to be home in a few weeks. However, for the next two weeks he will be at the Seacrest Facility at 1416 W. 6th Street, San Pedro, CA 90732. He is now receiving visitors there.

Mary & Ron Keyes. As I announced last week at church, Mary lost her Mom to both age and a failing heart. We await the details of a date for a service for Chaing Jing Jong, (likely sometime in the next two months). Cards of sympathy and concern can be sent to Ron and Mary Keyes at 5424 Little-bow Rd. Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

Abstract:
Our world is becoming more multicultural, yet according to The Pew Research Center, 78% of Unitarian Universalists still identify as White or Euro-American and 53% are considered upper middle class. How can we move toward a more inclusive and diverse Beloved Community more reflective of the community we find ourselves in? How can we cross cultural barriers without creating World War III or be left feeling guilt and shame? How can we frame this sacred work theologically grounded in our Principles and rich faith tradition?
Join The Rev. Dr. Jonipher Kupono Kwong and The Rev. Tera Klein in exploring culture defined broadly by increasing both our intercultural competency and humility. Learn some tools and exercises to communicate across culture and handle conflict cross-culturally when (not if) it arises.

PUC has been selected to host a workshop designed to help congregations throughout So Cal better understand race relations and how PUC can better reach out and engage a multi-cultural world. I see this as an excellent opportunity for me, for all of us, to be better prepared to minister to and attract the world around us

We are hosting members of congregations across So Cal. We need volunteers for home hospitality or kitchen help even if you cannot make the workshop yourself.

AIDS Project LA provides 20 different services from 15 locations throughout Los Angeles County, including: medical, dental, and behavioral health care; health education and HIV prevention; and STD screening and treatment. For people living with HIV, they offer housing support; benefits counseling; home health care; and the Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantries; among several other critically needed services.

News from the LGBTQ Concerns group: PUC has reached half of our fund-raising goal of $3000 for the LA AIDS Walk. The AIDS Walk has been a long-standing tradition for PUC and with two weeks left in the campaign, we're asking for you to give generously to reach our goal. We also welcome more people to donate their feet, and join us in the walk for fun, laughs, and good exercise.

SJ@PUC Coalition Movie Night

Last Friday the Social Justice Coalition kicked off the SJ@PUC Coalition Movie Night at church. We watched the powerful film, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. This movie and the nearly 20 people who filled the library was a promising showing for a first night. We will be back in that same room, on October 20 for another political documentary. All of these movies will be free of charge.

Environmental Priorities Network's Fall Forum

Environmental Priorities Network’s (EPN) Fall Forum is titled Our Solar Powered Future is Here and How You Can Take Part. The media is filled with human-interest footage of the storm named Harvey. Naomi Klein in her Intercept article posted Monday, says she has a message for the media, “Talk About Climate Change . . . The records being broken year after year — whether for drought, storm surges, wildfires, or just heat — are happening because the planet is markedly warmer than it has been since record-keeping began.” Climate scientist Dr. Jim Hansen on the Democracy Now show today says, “The question people are asking is what is the impact of humans on this hurricane? And there are substantial impacts on sea level, the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere therefore the amount of rainfall and on the strength of storms. Humans are already impacting all of those . .. .”
The upcoming EPN forum is the appropriate conversation. The Forum will be held on Saturday, November 4 at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Rolling Hills Estates 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Please save the date.

Dan Dempster has been authorized by Khenpo Migmar Tseten (Buddhist chaplain at Harvard University and Director of the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Study, Cambridge) and is a certified meditation instructor.
