A cheap window shadeA friend explained to me that our bodies tune out all the "normal" sounds they make—digestive sloshing, heart beats, and breathing—so you can focus on other things.

Tearing a calf muscle doesn't get the same exemption. I know this because I tore mine a couple of weeks ago.

No, it didn't roll up like a cheap window blind (thankfully), but it certainly got my attention. I'll never forget that sound.

Or that feeling.

I share this with you because we all have blind spots about the things that are going right in our lives. The little hitch in my giddy-up reminds me to be grateful to the people and things in my life that make it worthwhile.

Speaking of health, pink breast cancer awareness merchandise is sharing space in shop windows with the more traditional orange and black of Halloween. That's why October is sometimes called "Pinktober."

Researching my book, Live Full Throttle: Life Lessons From Friends Who Faced CancerI interviewed more than 100 people who told me stories about everything—from how the disease altered the trajectory of their lives, to how a cancer diagnosis changes the simple act of human conversation.

Here is what I learned: while we all know someone with cancer or another daunting illness, few of us know how to talk about it. Because nobody wants to be “that person” who says the wrong thing, many of us hold back from saying anything at all.

But when friends and family hold back, the unintended consequence for the person with cancer is feeling alone and unsupported.
