MASSIVE MANION ROAD STREET SALE

Saturday, September 30, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Residents of Manion Road in Burke Manion Estates will hold a street wide garage sale. Everything under the sun; toys, tools, gardening equipment, furniture, hardware, household items, dishes, clothing, costumes, sports equipment, musical instruments, building supplies, and so much more. Many families participating. Manion Road runs perpendicular between Corkery and Howie Roads. Please, no pickers until 9:00 a.m.

It's back! Starting October 10th, the CCA will be hosting the Cardboard Café at the Community Centre. Bring your neighbours or come meet new ones to play your favourite board game or learn a new one. Join us every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 7pm-9pm.

"Once Upon A Country Lane,” by Garfield Ogilvie
Have you ever wondered who lived in our area long before you came? Do you wonder who lived in the old farms and log cabins that you see scattered around the country side? Who were the Manions? Where did the name Corkery come from? Did you know Almonte was once known as Shipman’s Falls? The book, “Once Upon A Country Lane,” by Garfield Ogilvie tells the colourful history of the West Carleton and Upper Huntley region from Carleton Place to Carp to Almonte. Filled with wonderful photos and antecdotal stories from past and present residents, Ogilvie makes the history of our area come alive. Ogilvie reaches back to when First Nations people roamed the area and lived off the land that many of us have our homes on. Well researched and sprinkled with wonderful photos, along with true stories of the many families who came here in the early 1800's to clear, settle and build the community, Ogilvie gives the reader a clear picture of the past. He tells of settlers’ hardships, their achievements, their triumphs and struggles through Depression and wars. He speaks of the strong ties neighbours shared and the way in which they supported each other. It gives insight to an area that was once a thriving and vigorous farming community. Gary Ogilvie, a retired teacher and guidance counsellor with the Ottawa District School Board, spent most of his summers as a child and teen in the Upper Huntley area, living and working on his grandparent’s farm at O’Keefe’s Corners. His writing is filled with humour, history, pathos, romance and folklore – all offered in a simple, chatty, down-home style. Crochet Club is held every Wednesday evening (with the exception of Tuesday, September 26) from 7pm until 9pm at the Corkery Community Centre. All ages and skill levels welcome! All you need is yarn and a hook.

Community Support Services
The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC) offers various community supporter services in the Carp and West Carleton area for individuals who need support to function independently at home, because of a disability, illness or limitation due to aging. Here are just some of the services available:

Adult Day Program (for people with Dementia or Alzheimer's)
Snow Go Assist Program
Transportation (from $10-$18)
Caregiver Support Groups
Community Helpers (free training)

Spring is here... and so is the spring cleaning. If you're looking for a little help with cleaning up the yard, raking and mowing or if you have other odd jobs that you could use a hand with try Hire a Neighbour's Daughter or Son. With a list of available teens from our area on our website, you are sure to find someone to help. Check the list here.

Rink Boss Needed!

The Corkery Community will be needing a new rink boss for the next skating season. It will also be needing many more volunteer flooders. I will be going off to school next year with two of my brothers and will not be able to be the rink boss. If we do not have someone to fulfill this role and the role of flooders, the rink will not be able to operate next year and I know that that would be devastating for many families! You can do it! This is all you have to do…

These are the duties the Rink Boss would be responsible for:

Organize in getting the rink started.
Organize the flooding of the rink.
Organize the clearing of the rink.
Put together a report for the city at the end of the year.
A few small details that the board will give to you once you confirm.

You will receive compensation for your work from the Corkery board!

Flooders info:

A volunteer flooder is responsible for flooding at least one night a week. (1/2-1 hour of work.)
