Simplicity & Surrender: an evening of practice with
Noon Baldwin, co-founder of Ekuthuleni Retreat Place in France

Friday 29 September 2017
6.30pm for 7pm start to 9pm

Cost: By Donation
Location: Metta Centre

“Ekuthuleni” is an African term meaning “Place of peace”. The quality of this peace is a cleared, warm quality of quietness. In that place of peace, one can value – and practice – simplicity and surrender.

Join us in an evening with Noon Baldwin, co-founder of the Ekuthuleni Retreat Place in France. The Ekuthuleni Retreat Place runs meditation and eco retreats in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, led by Noon and other Buddhist teachers. To find out more about the retreat centre visit: http://ekuthuleni.wixsite.com/ retreats

Noon was born in Africa, Zambia, and grew up there, also in Penge, (south London), then France. She spent a lot of time as a child in the bush (and later France) in the hills, touching into connection with nature. With a wish to engage in the world more, Noon's early adult  life was an active one: as an international street performer, circus artist and teacher living in troupes and on the road. She often worked questioning social norms, teaching marginalised groups, bringing, through circus, body awareness, trust and reconnection. At 35, still a gypsy, Noon allowed her love of Dharma to come through, practicing and serving in Dharma centres for 12 years  in which the last five include offering guidance at both the Dharmagiri hermitage and Ekuthuleni.

How I helped End Two Wars:
an evening of practice with Tony Lenart

6 October 2017
6.30pm for 7pm start to 9pm
Cost: By Donation

Location: Metta Centre

An inspiring story of the power of love to overcome hatred, and the ability we all have to make a positive difference in the world.

Tony Lenart was the Deputy CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society, and the Australian Chairman of the Hunger Project, and he has always been interested in humanitarian causes. He was particularly concerned that millions of people were dying from poverty or as the result of rebel wars in Africa, but like most people, felt there was little he could do personally to significantly impact the situation.

However, he had been teaching leadership and conflict resolution in Australia, and wondered what would happen if he took these trainings to Africa and worked with African leaders, including rebels, and encouraged them to be great leaders who leave a positive legacy, and helped them to find peaceful alternatives to conflicts. He had no idea if he would succeed, yet ended up working with Vice Presidents, Generals, and the heads of rebel armies fighting against them.

In D.R. Congo he trained the top 178 rebels who were controlling half the country. They applied many of his teachings and ended what had become known as “The Great War of Africa”. And in Uganda his mediation training led to thousands of rebels laying down their arms and returning to mainstream society.

Come and hear this fascinating story of the power of love – and what is possible for all of us if we approach our enemies (whether rebels, colleagues, spouses, or even our own inner demons) with compassion and understanding.

From Wounds to Wisdom: a course on healing
By Venerable Wellawatte Seelagawesi Thero

4 November 2017
12.30pm for 1pm start to 4pm

Cost: By Donation
Location: Metta Centre

When there is a wound on our body, we often tend to it, but when there is a wound in our hearts, we may dismiss it or not tend to it as we don’t know how to do so. Yet every day, we store emotional pain in our hearts and harbour harmful thoughts in our mind, that aren’t properly acknowledged and cared for.

In this half day course with Buddhist teacher, Venerable Wellawatte Seelagawesi, we will explore ways to understand our suffering, and ways to transform wounds to wisdom.

Venerable Seelagawesi is the resident monk and spiritual guide at the Nissarana International Meditation Center in Kandy, Sri Lanka. He has spent numerous years teaching, healing, and guiding practitioners on the noble path at the Nissarana Centre, as well as giving talks and retreats internationally.

This course will take place during Venerable Seelagawesi’s short trip to Australia from his usual residence in Sri Lanka, and therefore we welcome all his students and supporters to join us this half-day course on healing and transformation.

Holistic Wellbeing Course
By Sister Emerald

Each Tuesday evening from
5 September to 10 October 2017
6.30pm – 8pm

Cost: By Donation
Location: Metta Centre

The Buddha taught four kinds of nutriments required for any living being to grow and maintain life. This teaching is most succinctly explained in the Sutra on the Four Kinds of Nutriments, utilising four striking metaphors.

The four nutriments are: food that is edible; food of sense impressions; food of volition; and food of consciousness.

Join us in this 6-week holistic wellbeing course as we explore how these four nutriments supports our wellbeing holistically in body, heart and mind. In each session, Sister Emerald will give a teaching based on the Sutra and lead us in meditation.

Help Build a Dhamma School!

Metta Centre is assisting the nuns of the Sri Tusitaramaya Monastery in Sri Lanka to raise funds to complete a Buddhist School building project in the small town of Eheliyagoda.

The Sunday Dhamma School was started on land donated to the nuns in 1975. The needs of the school have since outgrown its current capacity.

They have completed around a quarter of the construction work, are hoping to finish it prior to the rainy season in July and urgently need to raise around $20,000 to achieve this. The expanded school will accommodate and provide spiritual teachings to around 400 children, ranging from 5 to 17 years old.

Donations
Metta Centre will collect funds on behalf of the Dhamma School project.

Weekly Events

Thursday Evenings Qigong

Every Thursday
6.30pm – 7.30pm

Cost: By Donation
Location: Metta Centre

Healing Breath Qigong is a practice that helps us maintain good health, live longer, aging painlessly, prevent illness, heal naturally, and lightening up our spirit.

Our weekly Qigong classes are led by Sister Steadiness, bringing in a holistic wellbeing practice that incorporates mindfulness, meditation, slow flowing movements, deep rhythmic breathing, and developing a calm meditative state of mind.

Sister Steadiness studied Chinese Medicine in Canada and learned Qigong and Tai Chi with many famous teachers in China. She worked as a Chinese Acupuncturist, Herbalist and Qigong instructor in Canada.

One day waiting at a red traffic light, a car ran into her back, paralysing her. She could not move her body, not even to hold a pencil to write. Nonetheless, Sister Steadiness with her resilience, strong mind, and belief in self-healing, used Qigong and Tai Chi, nutritious eating and a positive mind to heal herself without any medication.

Miraculously, from the inner strength of mind that guided her, with great patience and diligence, she was able to heal naturally. The Shakyamuni Buddha teaches that we can be our own teacher, our own healer.

After curing herself, Sister ordained as a Buddhist nun under Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Through her years of meditation practices, Sister has been creating new Qigong movements, combined with what she has learnt. She named this practice ‘Healing Breath Qigong’.
