Healthy City Week

Healthy City Week is a unique annual programme of events promoting wellbeing that doesn’t cost the earth. Over 30 events this October will invite you to join individuals and organisations from across Bristol to exchange ideas and explore the intersections between the health of our citizens and the environmental sustainability of our city. A range of talks, workshop, debates and taster sessions will create and deepen conversations around some of the major health and sustainability challenges we face -  from the health impacts of air pollution and the benefits of active travel, to tackling cold homes in Bristol and creating healthier urban spaces. Did you miss this course last time? Well it's back from 10-12th November.

Fascinated by fungi? Or ever marvelled at the mysteries of mushrooms? Then this course is for you! Starting out with an introduction to fungal biology, diversity and ecology, exploring how incredible and important these organisms are, the course will then explore several outdoor and indoor growing techniques, for a range of delicious edible fungi. Covering everything you need to know to get growing your own fungi, from obtaining and storing fungi strains, right the way through to the development of grain spawn and production blocks. Following on from the understanding gained in the first two days, the third day will focus on field identification skills.

Does your group work with refugees and asylum seekers?

Would you like to welcome more refugees and asylum seekers to your community growing space but aren't sure where to start?
Gardens of Sanctuary is a new partnership project from the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens, City of Sanctuary, the Permaculture Association UK and The Grange, Great Cressingham.

Our vision is a network of green spaces with a culture of welcome, in which asylum seekers and refugees feel safe and appreciated as valued contributors and co-creators of community gardens and environmental projects across the UK.

We have just started the research phase of our work and we need your help! We're really keen to hear from groups across the UK about what your experiences have been with working with this often marginalised and vulnerable group of people. Even if you don't think your group has ever worked with refugees and asylum seekers, we'd still like to hear from you.

We've put together a short (3-5 minute) survey

West of England Gleaning Network

The Gleaning Network takes volunteers to farms to harvest anything that hasn't been harvested due to cosmetic standards, or gluts. They're looking for farms in the area who might have surplus, left on the fields, for whatever reason.

They supervise and train all the volunteers, and have insurance, so there's really no risk, and minimal disruption to the farm. The produce then gets distributed to food banks and good causes in the area, ensuring those who need it get good, nutritious food.

If you have surplus or know someone who might, get in touch with Heather on westengland@feedbackglobal.org

Designing Edible Spaces weekend

Lots of people would like to grow food but feel they don’t have the time or the space; all parts of the city can be used for food production and growing our own food locally is important for sustainability of cities. In this course you will learn about growing healthy organic food in whatever space you have.

This course will give you the design skills and knowledge to transform your garden or any green space into an abundant, edible landscape, that is full of food, friendly to wildlife, looks good, and needs little maintenance.

Cost: £ 95 - 170, booking is essential.

Aviva Community Fund

For community projects, an ordinary thing can mean everything, but funding can be a problem. The Aviva Community Fund is back, offering support and funding to causes that make a real difference where you live.

All you have to do is tell us what you would do with the money and just how much of a difference it could make to the community. If you took part last year, you can submit the same project or a new one. Only the top-voted projects in each category will make it through to the Finals, so make sure you tell everyone about your project and its importance to the community.

Support a local community deli in Redfield

A Kickstarter is running to create a new community deli in Redfield. During the day the space will run as a shop - a community convenience store. There'll be fresh fruit and veg, meats and cheese, all the essentials you could need....but with one difference - they'll be sourcing from local producers and suppliers.

It won't just be the store cupboard essentials though, they'll be constantly on the look out for those special items; like fresh pasta from Bedminster, charcuterie cured in Montpelier and perhaps a snifter of gin distilled in Bristol.

In the evenings and on closed days they'll be offering the space to hold workshops, talks and supper clubs. So whether you're a street food stall that wants to offer an extended menu, or you're a silk artist using botanical dyes, this space will provide you with a platform to share your talent and skills.
