The problems with hard water
Hard water is a common problem throughout the world. It’s usually caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals. In high concentrations, these can lead to limescale that can cause fouling on the quartz sleeve or thimble within UV systems. This fouling prevents UV light from penetrating the water or liquid and UV disinfection is significantly reduced. Scale build up can also cause the following issues:
- Skin irritation and shower head operational problems
- Blocked pipes
- Premature appliance or industrial equipment failures
- Scum rings around swimming pools and baths
- Heating element deterioration and many more problems

Traditional water softeners are large, require regular maintenance, electricity and recharging of resins to ensure optimal performance. They also add salt (sodium chloride) or other chemicals (potassium chloride) which is unpleasant if consumed and can cause harm to the environment.
