This autumnal walking tour will focus on the history of beer in Philadelphia, and the permanent residents of Laurel Hill who produced, distributed and enjoyed it. The tour concludes with a toast and a sampling of local beers.

Seven Deadly Sins in the Cemetery
Tuesday, October 3 at 6pm
The Victorian era is often noted for moral, straitlaced behavior—but Laurel Hill residents had their share of vices. Underneath all of the proper behavior lurked the temptation of the seven deadly sins: greed, lust, wrath, envy, pride, sloth and gluttony. This after-work twilight tour will feature those who gave into temptation.

History Highlight: Laurel Hill's First Burial
On October 21, 1836 Laurel Hill Cemetery’s earth was opened for the first time to receive the remains of a Quaker woman, Mercy Carlisle. According to the diary of one of the cemetery’s founding members, John Jay Smith, “The funeral took place and was conducted in a very orderly manner. Thirty carriages attended, and the body was placed in the lot belonging to Joseph Cowperthwaite. Contrary to the opinion of numerous croakers opposed to our plan we found the digging very good, the soil of the best kind for graves, and but very few stones.” The simple headstone that you see today on Mercy’s grave was erected in 1990 by the Friends of Laurel Hill to replace the original that had deteriorated. Mercy Carlisle is buried in Section E, Lot 1.

The Gravediggers' Ball is the annual fundraiser of the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to preserve, interpret and promote the site for which it exists. With a costume contest and live music by "All About Me Band," don't miss your opportunity to attend this one-of-a-kind event!

Fall Family Day: Halloween Picnic and Parade

Spend an autumn afternoon exploring the many wonders and mysteries of Laurel Hill Cemetery while celebrating Halloween. Fall Family Day at Laurel Hill will thrill and chill both young and old! The cemetery’s primary location overlooking the Schuylkill River will offer visitors majestic views of the colorful fall foliage and vibrant landscape along Kelly Drive. Activities will include arts and crafts, a pumpkin patch and Halloween games and goodies. Say Cheese Food Truck will be on site, so remember to bring cash!
