THE DEVELOPMENT DIGEST
OCTOBER 2017

Welcome to The Development Digest, a monthly guide delivering the latest news from Fremont's Community Development Department

NEW TEMPORARY PLAZA DOWNTOWN

Downtown Fremont is on the rise! The demolition of the former Town Fair Shopping Center has started in preparation for the development of the future Downtown Community Center (Phase 1 of the Civic Center project). The demolition will take approximately three months; however, construction for the Downtown Community Center is not anticipated to begin until summer 2019. Therefore, in an effort to continue to contribute toward creating an active and vibrant Downtown for residents to enjoy and connect with, the site will be transformed into a temporary plaza by the placemaking curators, Public Space Authority. They will work with the City to create a temporary plaza that will include food trucks, outdoor games, public art and music, a beer garden, maker space, and regularly scheduled community events. The plaza will open in April 2018 and will test out concepts that can later be integrated into the permanent plaza designed for the new Downtown Community Center.

FREMONT RECOGNIZED FOR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

At this year’s League of Cities Annual Conference in Sacramento, the City of Fremont was presented with the "Silver Level" Beacon Award for its work to create a healthier, more efficient, vibrant, and prosperous community. Created by the Institute for Local Government (ILG) in 2009, the Beacon Program honors local governments for their voluntary efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and adopt policies that promote sustainability. Fremont was one of only eight local governments to receive the prestigious Beacon Award this year.

The "Silver Level" award recognizes the city’s achievements for reducing community and municipal greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage. Fremont also received "Gold Level" recognition for achievements in each of the ten best practice areas highlighted in the ILG’s Sustainability Best Practices Framework. Significant Fremont achievements include the comprehensive energy and water efficiency upgrade of City facilities, the solar plus energy storage “Microgrid” demonstration project on City fire stations, the adoption of green building reach codes requiring mandatory solar PV and electric vehicle readiness in new developments, and the launch of the online Fremont Green Challenge residential climate action engagement platform.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES

To promote City services and help our residents find what they need, we have created this nifty handout that includes phone numbers and links to several resources for Community Development and Public Works. It's a lot of helpful information all in one place and a great resource to have hanging on your fridge or saved on your phone!

HOT TOPICS FOR HOMEOWNERS: NEW RESIDENTIAL WEBPAGE

Each month, we will discuss building topics aimed at homeowners and the different types of projects they may be considering including home additions, remodels, repairs, and upgrades.

This month, we present our new residential webpage, Fremont.gov/ResidentialProjects. Find everything you need to start your residential project all in one place. The City answers questions like "Who do I contact to get started on my project?" and "What are the fees associated with residential projects?" You can also find project handouts and resources that will list everything you need to do to complete your project.
