The Porch Swing
Jacob's Porch E-Newsletter
As the semester progresses and students begin to settle into their busy routines, we are excited to know that Jacob's Porch is a place where students are able to come and refresh their spirits during the week. Every time I walk into Jacob's Porch, I know I will not be alone because it is common to find at least a couple students studying or just hanging out. I have noticed that Jacob's Porch offers a chance for students to breath and take rest during the long days of classes, studying, and meetings. As we get into a regular routine, we are also working to ensure that we do not get too comfortable. While Jacob's Porch is a place to refresh our spirits, we are constantly challenging ourselves to rethink and rebuild what it means to live as Christians in the tumultuous season that is one's time in college.
Among the things we have done to refresh, rethink, and rebuild are the Fall Advance and discussions with scholars like Dr. Steven Brown on the subject of virtue ethics, asking the question, "What is morality?" and also Dr. Mark Allan Powell on the subject of the Historical Jesus and politics (if you missed this discussion, check it out here). There are so many ways in which God is revealed to us, it is our hope to continue searching and learning in a variety of ways.

Peace,
Sammi
Fall Advance!
We had a great group of students travel up to Camp Mowana in Mansfield, Ohio this past weekend for our Fall Advance. We connected with one another around the themes of refresh, rethink and rebuild. The students came up with this theme for the year as it is  indicative of the cyclical nature of their faith and life these days.

While on the Advance, we had affinity groups of storytelling, hiking, and art  projects that enabled the community to engage more deeply with one another around the theme. We also had a bunch of one on ones, worship experiences, a high ropes course challenge and delicious food that we all chipped in to cook together. And the weather and outdoor setting couldn't have been more beautiful!
While folks were at the Fall Advance, our pastoral associate, Sammi was a little busy.... getting married! Congrats to the newlyweds Sammi and Ethan Shivener.
Dr. Steven Brown gets cozy as we begin to discuss, "What is morality?" Check out this discussion here.
