Could you represent local people in health commissioning?

We are looking to recruit two volunteers to represent the voice of local people at our Public Engagement, Experience and Equality Committee (PEEEC).

PEEEC is a committee of the Governing Body whose purpose is to assure that engagement, patient experience and equality and diversity activity is being carried out in line with statutory requirements and to a high standard, and that information from this activity is used appropriately to influence commissioning. The committee also assures that work in these areas is effectively joined up with partners and champions the patient, carers and public voice within commissioning.

The Public Engagement, Experience and Equality Committee meets for two hours, every 6 weeks, at the CCG offices – 722 Prince Of Wales Road, Sheffield, S9 4EU.

To express your interest in this role, please complete this form and send to sheccg.engagementactivity@nhs.net or to Engagement Team, NHS Sheffield CCG, 722 Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield S9 4EU by Monday 2nd October 2017.

Prescribing Gluten Free Foods to adults in Sheffield

We want to hear your views about the prescribing of gluten free foods for adults

We’re running a consultation from 8 September 2017 to 20 October 2017 about the prescription of Gluten Free foods for adults.

Our local NHS has a limited budget and with an increasing demand for services we have to evaluate every service very carefully.

Manufactured Gluten Free foods have been available on NHS prescription to patients diagnosed with Coeliac disease since the late 1960s.

This service started when manufactured Gluten Free foods were not widely available in supermarkets, as they are today, and when the range of other foods which are naturally gluten free was smaller.

Consequently, we are now reviewing the guidelines on Gluten Free food. We are proposing to change the guidelines to ask GPs to discontinue prescribing it to adults aged over 18.

However, GPs would still be able to prescribe Gluten Free foods if they felt there was a genuine risk that a vulnerable individual would become undernourished without the prescription.

Please let us know your thoughts on this proposal – whether you live with Coeliac disease or not - using our online survey.

More information can be found on our website here.

Our partners

Help the voice of local people be heard across South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw agencies involved in health and social care are starting to work in closer partnership to improve care for you, your family and community. As their work develops, it’s vital that the voice of local people is at the heart of the work.

They’re looking for people to be a part of a Citizens' Panel across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw that can offer an independent view and critical friendship on matters relating to the work of Health and Care Working Together, which is an Accountable Care System (ACS).

The role will help to ensure that the voice of the local population is heard and influences any developments. With other members of the Panel, you will do this by making sure engagement opportunities are created for citizens, patients and carers and that they are meaningful, targeted and relative to the changes suggested.

To apply, please send your CV and a covering letter by email to helen.stevens11@nhs.net or by post to: Helen Stevens, Health and Care Working Together, c/o NHS Sheffield CCG, 722 Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield S9 4EU.

The deadline for applications is Friday 13 October 2017.

National consultation on items which should not be routinely prescribed

Last year 1.1 billion prescription items were dispensed in primary care at a cost of £9.2 billion. This cost coupled with finite resources means it is important that the NHS achieves the greatest value from the money that it spends.

We know that across England there is a significant difference in what is being prescribed and to whom.  Often patients are receiving medicines which have been proven to be ineffective or in some cases dangerous, for which there are other more effective, safer and/or cheaper alternatives.

CCGs asked for a nationally co-ordinated approach to the development of commissioning guidance in this area to ensure consistency and address unwarranted variation. The aim is that this will lead to a more equitable process for making decisions about guidance on medicines but CCGs will need to take individual decisions on implementation locally.

You can find out more, and have your say, on the national consultation here.
