Watching the Redskins get in the win column last week had me fired up. And not just because of my rooting interest in the Burgundy and Gold!

It was really cool to see two of our High School Players of the Year from the DC Touchdown Club presented by Capital Bank first Awards Dinner in the starting lineup and making plays for the Redskins! It was another reminder that not only is the Washington area a football hotbed, but that our Awards Dinner truly highlights some special players!

Look back at that 2013 Awards Dinner. D.C. High School Player of the Year Yannick Ngakoue from Friendship Collegiate was a standout defensive end at Maryland and is in his second season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Maryland High School Player of the Year Kendall Fuller from Good Counsel shined at defensive back for Virginia Tech and now starts for the Redskins. Virginia High School Player of the Year Jonathan Allen from Stone Bridge was a star defensive lineman at Alabama and selected in the first round of this past NFL draft by the Redskins.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that these players were up on stage receiving their Timmie Award.

So as I watch high school football highlights and read about our Players of the Week, I also wonder how many of these high school players throughout our region are headed for success on Saturdays and Sundays.

Here’s to another great weekend of football!

Steve
Atholton senior free safety Jake Peretti set a Maryland state high school record by intercepting five passes in a single game and he also made 16 tackles leading the Raiders to a 17-14 victory over Oakland Mills.

Kendall Fuller
Fuller was in the starting lineup and made four tackles in the Redskins' 27-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Fuller and his defensive backfield teammates will be challenged again this Sunday when the Redskins face off against the Oakland Raiders (2-0).

MARYLAND

Bullis (3-0) at Quince Orchard (3-0), Friday, 6:30: Perhaps this rare meeting of strong private and public school teams will provide a challenge for Quince Orchard. The Cougars have outscored their first three opponents by a combined 152 to 22.

VIRGINIA

Centreville (2-1) at South Lakes (4-0), Friday, 7:  South Lakes has been dominating every team that it has come in contact with this season. Led by RB Spencer Alston, the Seahawks have outscored opponents 175 to 24 and have yet to be threatened.

PRIVATE/DC

Friendship Collegiate (3-0) vs. DeMatha (3-1), Friday, 7 at Prince George's Sports and Learning Center: Coming off its victory over H.D. Woodson in the Ward 7 Bowl, the Knights get a shot at another one of the region's traditionally strong teams. DeMatha has put together a three-game winning streak since a season-opening loss at Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas.

Events DC and Bob Geoghan present the 2017 Nell and John Wooden Leadership in Coaching Award dinner honoring Roy Williams, University of North Carolina Head Men’s Basketball Coach, on October 12 at 6:00pm in The Watergate Hotel (2650 Virginia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037). Additionally, Events DC has identified four Washington, DC metro area coaches who have dedicated their lives to producing talented young men and women and will recognize them alongside Coach Williams.

Previous Nell and John Wooden Leadership in Coaching Award recipients include: Jim Boeheim (Syracuse University), Dale Brown (Louisiana State University), John Calipari (University of Kentucky), and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke University).
