Mission Minute: Preparing students for world

I grew up in an age of information scarcity.  The information I needed for my education resided in textbooks, encyclopedias, and teachers.  In fact, I remember my 8th-grade teacher outlining the science textbook on the board for us to copy and study.

Today, with the answer to many questions at our fingertips, we need to ask questions of the education we provide:  If information is so readily available, what is the purpose of school?  How can we help young people navigate the complexity of all this information? How do we define learning?

At La Salle, we still root our work in the teacher-student relationship and the mission started by St. John Baptist de La Salle that has lasted hundreds of years. That being said, we want our students to be prepared for a world that will need innovators, problem-solvers, and ethical decision-makers.  In fact, the World Economic Forum recently released the top 10 skills individuals in the workforce will need by 2020; the top three are complex problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.  Others say that rather than knowing a set body of knowledge, learning how to learn will be what’s needed most when our students graduate.

As a staff, we are ready to respond. When asked to state their beliefs about learning, our teachers pointed to the need for flexibility, critical questioning, relevance, collaboration, choice, and the importance of learning from mistakes.  As we move through this year, we will continue to challenge ourselves to foster learning environments where these beliefs can take root.

Students raise funds during Walkathon

A mechanical bull bucked in the auditorium, the music of Mr. Wild’s and Mr. Donnelly’s ensemble filled the air, and students walked countless steps around campus during the 2017 La Salle Walkathon on Friday.  Student council leaders got things rolling with an energetic kick-off assembly. Then, after the walk and lunch, Mr. Kuffner announced the results of the campaign's class contests:

Highest Percentage of Students at Goal: TIE Between Mr. Oey and Mrs. Gantt's Falcon Formation classes at 85%

Food Truck Parties
Freshman: Mrs. Kessler's class (only beat Oey by $100)
Sophomore: Mr. Voge's class
Junior: Mr. Barstow's class (only beat Snow by $34)
Senior: Mr. Kane's class

Top Fundraising Class: Mr. Voge's class just barely beat Mrs. Kessler's class by only $18

Donations are still being accepted through Friday, Sept. 29. Donate online or turn in cash/checks to the main office.

Thanks to all of our generous supporters and families for your donations and volunteer time.  We are proud of our Lasallian community and today was a great example of why that is!

Join us on campus for this "Party with a Purpose" on Oct. 7

The evening features a hosted social hour, dinner, dancing, and after party.

The night also showcases many of the school's students who will sing or speak about their experiences at La Salle.

Whether you're a longtime Lasallian or the parent of a new student, you're invited to Believe. Wear what you want -- we've seen everything from denim to diamonds!

Senior places 10th in world at triathlon

La Salle senior and national champion triathlete Andy Krueger placed 10th out of 74 athletes in the male 16-19 age group at the International Triathlon Union's 2017 World Triathlon Grand Final Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Sunday.

The Portland resident completed a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike, and a 5-kilometer run in 01:04:08.
Andy's time in the 5K run was a personal best of 16:40 — 30 seconds faster than his any of his 5Ks — even those not preceded by swim and bike sprints.

The Rotterdam race follows Andy's victory last month at the USA Triathlon Age Group 2017 National Championships in Omaha, Neb., where he won his age group in the sprint distance with a time of 1:00:13.

"Andy's success stems from his ability to see the big picture, and continue to put in the hard work even though some race results will feel like a setback," said James Bauman, Andy's coach with the Strive Youth and Junior Triathlon Team in Portland. "Andy has embraced these setbacks as area of opportunities to continuously improve his skill, technique, strategy, and mental focus."

Add to that a good attitude, and Andy "is a joy to coach," said Mikel Rathmann, who coaches Andy on La Salle's cross country, swimming, and track and field teams. "He is a hard worker and very respectful."

Got questions? Ask parents@lsprep.org

There's a lot going on at La Salle, and parents and students are bound to have questions: What do kids wear to the dance? When are tryouts for basketball? Is it OK for my freshman to go on an immersion trip? Where do I go if I have a question about PowerSchool?

That’s why we’ve developed the parent resource emailbox, parents@lsprep.org, Think of it as a hotline – where you can talk to someone who's been in your shoes. This mailbox email is managed by La Salle staff who are alums, have had, or do have children at La Salle. Your questions will be addressed within 24 hours and kept confidential (remember there is no bad question!).  So, if you're curious, ask away. We're all here to help.
