WWFHA at Seattle City Council Meeting

WWFHA had board and player representation at the September 18th Seattle City Council meeting in support of the the proposal to redevelop the KeyArena into a world-class, multi-purpose sports and entertainment arena at Seattle Center. WWFHA advocated for securing an NHL team, which will expand the opportunities and interest in ice hockey for generations to come in the local area.

Some of the points made by WWFHA board member Dave Patton at the meeting were:
  • Many are excited about pro teams coming to the community because of the games to be played and the entertainment value, while others focus on the economic impact to the city; however, for WWFHA we think about what a pro hockey team and its players do in the community. Their outreach and charitable programs make direct positive impacts in the community.
  • A NHL team will help inspire and touch the lives of young fans and community groups beyond sports programs. The community impact is the true benefit for bringing in pro teams to a city.
  • Another benefit are the resources that a NHL team brings into the community. WWFHA has grown by 133% in the last 2 years and our growth will be stagnated without more ice rinks. Bringing an NHL team here will immediately drive the development of new community ice arenas, which are desperately needed. Without them, the game won't be able to continue to grow.
A special 'thank you' goes out to the NHL to Seattle group for organizing the efforts to rally people to the city council meeting!

To support the initiative to redevelop KeyArena please contact the Council members by emailing council@seattle.gov with the above points.
