Spring Forward

We are one month into spring, warmer weather is coming, and daylight savings has kicked in. Daylight savings means it has been harder to get up in the morning but this comes with the bonus of additional light hours in the evening. With changes in sleep patterns there is an increased risk of Fatigue so we have included some helpful information for employers.

Our new Psychological First Aid course is ready to go, and has been timed to launch during Mental Health Awareness Week. The TriEx marketing team was fortunate enough to be able to sit in on the trial courses and we are very excited about what this course offers. Initially this course will be run out of Christchurch with plans to bring it into Auckland in the near future. Learn more about what this course is about below.

Currently WorkSafe is actively encouraging employers to undertake workplace monitoring to assess the environment that their employees are working in, with a current focus on Noise. You can read more about our workplace noise assessments below.

This years Stroke Awareness Week is focusing on Blood Pressure. We have some information on what a stroke is and how to spot one, and information on how TriEx can work with you to maintain a healthy and productive workforce.

Enjoy this months read - from the TriEx Team.

Workplace Noise Exposure

Are you monitoring the noise exposures in you workplace?

WorkSafe NZ is actively encouraging employers to undertake workplace monitoring to assess the environment that their employees are working in. Such assessments may include noise, dust, chemical exposure, lighting levels or exposure to moulds and fungi.
If you have already taken steps to monitor the hearing of your employees by carrying out annual hearing tests, that is great news – however this is only part of the process.

Noise exposure monitoring is required under the Health and Safety at Work Act, General Risk and Workplace Management (GRWM) regulations. It is a requirement that a workplace noise assessment or survey is completed every 5 years or if any new equipment has been installed or if any equipment has been withdrawn from use.

This is where the TriEx Occupational Hygiene team can help you. Our two experienced Occupational Hygienists are trained in workplace noise assessments. These noise assessments include the identification of noise sources, the assessment of employee noise exposures, advice on administrative and PPE controls and recommendations for engineering and longer term controls.

Workplace noise assessments include the identification of noise sources, the assessment of employee noise exposures, advice on administrative and PPE controls and recommendations for engineering and longer term controls. Advice is also provided as to what level of hearing protection is required and the type of hearing protection device best suits the working environment.

Stroke Awareness Week

Stroke Awareness Week runs from Monday October 2 to Sunday October 8. A stroke is when one of the arteries to the brain is either blocked or bursts. The brain does not get the blood it needs to function and brain cells die.

This year's focus is on blood pressure and will culminate in the Big Blood Pressure Check on Saturday October 7 at one of the locations nationwide, listed here.

Failure to detect and control high blood pressure is the single biggest cause of avoidable strokes. A person with high blood pressure is up to seven times more likely to have a stroke than someone with normal or low blood pressure.
The FAST campaign encourages New Zealanders to learn the key signs of stroke and to act fast by calling 111 if they suspect a stroke.
The TriEx Workplace Wellness programme will help your employees check their risk factors. A healthy lifestyle translates into individuals with more energy, concentration and less absenteeism which will result in maintaining a healthy and productive workforce.

Employees are interviewed and undertake a cardiovascular risk assessment including blood pressure checks. All staff will retain a booklet of their cardiovascular risk assessments and health results which they can pass on to their own doctor.

Daylight Savings & Fatigue

The change of the seasons brings with it warmer weather and more daylight hours in the evenings after work. It's always a great time of year when you realise you've still got a couple of more hours at the end of the day before the sun sets.

However, the change of daylight savings can have some strange effects on your sleeping patterns and you may find yourself less tired at night and more tired in the morning for a while. Good quality sleep is very important for optimum health.

While it might seem difficult at first, try to go to bed and wake up at the same time as you previously did. If you're having difficulty sleeping, your body will eventually re-adjust to daylight savings. Going to bed at different times each night prolongs this process.

According to WorkSafe statistics, people who are tired and fatigued are 30% more likely to have an accident. Both businesses and workers have a responsibility to manage fatigue and the risks that arise from it.

WorkSafe has a fatigue quick guide with information for businesses and workers which explains their respective responsibilities to manage fatigue.

WorkSafe NZ prosecutions

Phillip Burrows, trading as Phillip Burrows Racing Stables, was ordered to pay reparation of $25,000 for a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

Phillip had allowed two children to ride on the outside of a water tanker truck while wetting a horse racing track. One of the children fell from the truck and was run over by the rear wheels, and was hospitalised for a month.

No fine was imposed due to financial difficulties. This is the second sentencing under the new HSW Act.
Two companies (which have the same sole director), Quality Kitchens NZ Ltd and Quality Construction NZ Ltd, have been fined a total of $78,000 between them for Health & Safety Breaches.

Both companies had an incident where a worker was seriously injured while using a bench saw and required surgery on their hand. WorkSafe was not notified when the incident occurred and only found out when one of the victims complained to WorkSafe two months after the incident.
