I cannot think of a more important issue for the downtown than the repair and revitalization of Oxnard Boulevard. If Oxnard Oxnard Boulevard remains an un-walkable blighted highway - it bodes poorly for all downtown revitalization efforts and sends the wrong message to those that have an interest in improving their properties or adding housing and mixed-use businesses to Oxnard Boulevard.
This idea has been confirmed by a number of recent conversations I have had with downtown property owners.
Revitalizing Oxnard Boulevard will tell the world and potential developers that Oxnard is finally a progressive place willing to invest in and improve its namesake main street. The City Council could begin this process by approving an ordinance to reroute semi-trailer traffic off Oxnard Boulevard.
Who will be a champion for the revitalization of Oxnard Boulevard?
It is us, the people of Oxnard, please join Oxnard RENAISSANCE to bring Oxnard Boulevard back to life. Revitalizing Oxnard Boulevard will kickstart economic development for the whole downtown.
It is important for us to walk on Oxnard Boulevard today - yes, turn off whatever device you are using to read this - and walk up and down Oxnard Boulevard (between 3rd and Wooley). What does it feel like to walk on Oxnard's namesake main street? I have done this a number of times and know it's not a great walking experience.
The world speeds by on a blighted highway - Oxnard's main street (and downtown) and keeps on going. What in the experience says "I am a safe and fun place to be?" or "I want to walk or shop on Oxnard Boulevard or downtown?" There is nothing appealing about Oxnard Boulevard, our main street - nothing.
Oxnard City revitalization efforts must not ignore Oxnard Boulevard and only concentrate on the areas around Plaza Park. I have always thought that when Oxnard revitalizes Oxnard Boulevard, will Oxnard’s downtown come fully alive.
