September 27, 2017

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

What a wonderful celebration of 70 years this past Saturday!  It was great to see current students and families, alumni and alumni families, current and past faculty and staff, parishioners, and friends come together in gratitude for ASB School.  Thank you again to everyone who made the celebration possible.

Last week, I attended the annual fall retreat for all Catholic school principals in the Archdiocese.  I have to be honest that I was not looking forward to this event for several reasons.  It was the first week of MAP testing, I had multiple evening meetings, and it is early in the year to be away from the building.  The retreat was also held in Seabeck, which seemed like a long way to go…needless to say, I wasn’t bringing the best attitude about the retreat with me.  Yes, even as a principal of a school instilling the values of growth mindset and grit, I was having a difficult time mustering up my own.

Fr. Ron Nuzzi from Notre Dame led our retreat. He framed our retreat with the Great Mysteries of our Catholic Faith: the Incarnation, the Trinity, the Paschal Mystery, and the Eucharist.  I hope to be able to share moments of his presentation throughout the year, but today I would like to focus on the Trinity.  Fr. Nuzzi acknowledged the challenge of understanding the Trinity, even as life-long Catholics.  How do we explain three persons in one God?  I have to say, his explanation was the best I have heard.  He said, “The Trinity is the theological foundation of community.” The Trinity explains God as a relationship – three persons in one God that have the perfect relationship.  Fr. Nuzzi asked us to reflect on the idea that if God needs a relationship, why do we, as humans, ever think we can do things on our own.  We are called to community because that is how God made us.  Everyone is made in the image of God, which means everyone is made to be called to relationships.

As we think about relationships, let us keep our 8th graders in our prayers.  They will be at Camp Hamilton tomorrow and Friday for their own retreat.  As an 8th grade parent, I honestly cannot believe that this class is approaching the end of their time at ASB.  We hope that this retreat gives them the opportunity to bask in joyful moments with each other, rejuvenate their relationships with each other, and experience gratitude for their class community.

As Fr. Nuzzi so eloquently reminded us at retreat, community is at the heart of who we are because of who God is and we are most like God when we work to improve the quality of our relationships.  I left the retreat with quite a different feeling than I had brought at the beginning.  I left filled with hope, joy and I felt so grateful I attended.  We all need to take moments to bask in the joyful relationships we each have, and we may even need other people to create opportunities for us to do so (like making us go on retreat!).  I would like to challenge each of us to continue to bask in those joyful moments – the ah-ha moment in learning, the chance to build friendships on the sidelines, the smile you share with another parent or member of our staff in the morning, the quick email to say thank you to someone, the blessing of prayer together at mass, or even just recognizing how good it feels to be a part of ASB.  I cannot say enough how lucky we are to be here and how grateful I am for each member of our community.

Best,
Kathleen Conklin

Basketball Assessments for Middle School Students
In middle school, basketball teams are split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. This requires an assessment process that allows assessors to determine the best fit for each player.  Assessments will be held on Tuesday, October 17, and Wednesday, October 18 and Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24.  In order to be eligible for the varsity team, students need to attend at least one of the assessment nights, and two would be preferred.  The assessors will be looking at a wide variety of the skills including, ball handling, passing, shooting and court awareness.  This process is designed to place each student on the team that will allow them to have the most success during the basketball season and we strive to create an environment that is low stress and lots of fun. Parents and coaches are not allowed in the gym to watch the assessments.  Please see our Athletic Handbook here regarding assessments and policies on page 12.
