We asked and they answered!

The CHA sent a survey to all candidates running for Council. The responses are posted exactly as we received them from the campaigns. No responses were received from any of the candidates running in wards 2, 12 or 14. Ward 8 had a participation rate of 100%.

To find out more information about when and where to vote and the candidates running for Mayor or Councillor visit Elections Calgary.

Please click on the link below to read what the candidates had to say about heritage. If a candidate for your ward/mayor is missing it means they chose to not take-part in our survey.

Community Planning Exchange: Change in Calgary

Saturday Nov 4, 2017 8:30-1pm - Crescent Heights Community Associations 1101 2 St NW

Event time 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, registration at 8:30 am.

The Federation of Calgary Communities are holding their 6th Community Planning Exchange (CPE) exploring the theme of “Change in Communities”. The heritage component is a talk and discussion activity about the use of Heritage Overlay planning tools to preserve the architectural character and/or historic significance of special areas in Edmonton. The speaker will be David Johnston, principal heritage planner for the City of Edmonton sharing that city's experience with Heritage Overlays. This will be a great opportunity to learn and ask questions about this planning tool. There are also talks on laneway housing and age-friendly planning plus a networking lunch!

Join us on Saturday, November 4th for our 6th Community Planning Exchange (CPE) at the Crescent Heights Community Association. This year CPE will explore the theme of “Change in Communities”.  Change in communities can consists of both physical and social changes in the form of redevelopment and demographic shifts. Being able to understand these changes will help us understand the future of our city.

This half day workshop will give communities an understanding of three innovative approaches that are being used in our city to  address change:

  • laneway housing; homes typically built into pre-existing lots, usually in the backyard and opening onto the back lane.
  • heritage overlays; planning tools used to preserve the special architectural character and/or historic significance of certain areas within the city
  • age-friendly planning; planning our communities with demographic changes in mind, in order to enhance quality of life as people age

Through presentations from community and industry experts, you will learn how the city is addressing change to make our communities more vibrant and diverse. Your choice of a walking tour or discussion activity will then follow, which will allow you to understand how these approaches have been applied. Please dress appropriately for November weather.

This event will wrap-up with a networking lunch, so there will be lots of opportunity for community, industry representatives, and City staff to meet, build new connections, and strengthen old ones. We look forward to seeing you there.

Speakers include:

  • Damon Hayes Couture, a local architect from Studio North, who will present on laneway housing
  • David Johnston, a heritage planner with the City of Edmonton, who will present on heritage overlays.
  • Raynell McDonough, Kimberly Haskell, and David Galoska, from the City of Calgary, who will present on age-friendly planning.
