A Tribute to Feng Xiaogang

China Onscreen is proud to honor the artistic achievements of China’s leading popular filmmaker Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚) with a five-film Tribute. We are thrilled to host the director in person for the US Premiere of his latest film Youth (芳华 2017) on November 3.

Feng has been blowing up the Chinese box office for over two decades ever since his first smash hit, the social comedy The Dream Factory (1997) virtually reinvented the Chinese New Year film genre. Since then the director has criss-crossed genres – urban satires, historical epics, romances, action thrillers and the war film – with populist alacrity.

Frequently compared to Steven Spielberg not only for his longevity atop the Chinese film industry but also for the artier turn his films have taken of late, Feng works readily with American stars – among them Donald Sutherland, Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins – alongside his regular collaborators, including Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing and her male counterparts Ge You and Zhang Hanyu.

The Tribute kicks off with a double bill of Cell Phone (2003) and the rarely screened Assembly (2007) at the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus on October 24. Aftershock (2010) screens at the CAA in Century City on October 25, followed by I Am Not Madame Bovary (2016) on October 30, also at the James Bridges Theater.

Youth (above) will premiere on November 3 at UCLA’s Billy Wilder Theater, with a post-screening Q&A with Feng.
