Here are the helmets UNLV will wear this weekend to pay tribute to those victims & heroes involved in the tragic incident on Sunday. (link)
Cornhuskers: Nebraska Omaha AD & Nebraska alum Alberts emails the UNO staff on his rumored candidacy to return to Lincoln as AD, "There has been much speculation and conjecture about my interest and candidacy from local media and others. I owe you an update — I was contacted by the search firm to interview as part of their process, and I appreciate the opportunity. I want you to know that I have not pursued or interviewed for any job in my 8 years at UNO and I don’t intend to alter that thinking now." (link); The Omaha World-Herald's Shatel: "Don't listen to conspiracy theories...Alberts happy in Omaha." (Link); The Lincoln Journal Star's Sipple thinks it's clear NU & Turnkey Search are targeting "heavyweights." Believes the Huskers need someone in the mold of Northwestern AD Phillips or Alabama's Byrne. (link)
NCAA Particulars: While the media misunderstood the survey on potential changes to current transfer legislation, they can now rest assured that offering free movement for student-athletes won't be on the table for a full review. 2K+ admins, faculty & HCs responded to the survey & there is one very notable change in the works: student-athletes would no longer have to receive permission to explore transferring, instead a notification system could be used. Key: "...once notification is given, the current school would have the option of not renewing athletics aid, permitting the school to offer that scholarship when recruiting a student-athlete for the next year." (link, link); South Dakota State AD & Transfer Working Group Chair Sell: "There's still a lot of work to be done." (link); Limiting the size of FB staffs to 30 who can be involved in on-campus recruiting could be effective by August 1 of next year. "The number of designated individuals would include all countable coaches, which currently are the head coach and nine assistants but will increase to 10 assistants Jan. 9. It also would include all graduate assistant coaches." (link)
Louisville Interim AD Tyra speaks to the media again, continues to be strong in his praise for on-leave AD Jurich, says Senior Assoc. AD for Development Jurich indicated his father was "comfortable" with Trya running the department in his absence. Tyra also notes MBB ACs Johnson & Fair are still on staff & being paid, but are not engaged with the team right now. Commits to clearing distractions for Interim MBB HC Padgett. (link)
Former AAU coach Piggie, focal point of the 1999 federal case that involved Kansas, Nike, agents, boosters, recruits & cash, responds to North Carolina MBB HC Williams recently saying Nike had never helped him get a player. Piggie: "Well, that’s [expletive]. I mean, come on. Come on. You know Roy knew. He was in the mix. He knew what was going on. Roy’s got amnesia. [...] Roy knew what was happening. In 1997, 1998, 1999, he knew what was happening because he was in the middle of it. These college coaches … come on." UNC Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Kirschner says Williams' thoughts centered on the shocking nature of how the recent developments came to light. (link)
More MBB Saga: NYT's Tracy & Zagoria, "Brian Bowen’s Path to Louisville: A Federal Case Study." While no new information is introduced, the pair review Bowen's recruiting timeline & blips on the radar that could have indicated behind the scenes forces were at work. (link); The Arizona Daily Star's Hansen calls out recent statements from Arizona, "The right thing for the UA to do is to step into the sunshine and take some questions, even the uncomfortable questions, squint into a TV camera and let us know there is a heart — and not just a Tin Man typing out attorney-driven damage control." (link); More from Duke's Coach K, "We are not running this the way a billion-dollar industry should be run. We try to put a circle into a square. That’s what men’s college basketball is. It’s not a bad circle. But it can’t be done like the square." (link); CBSSports.com's Parrish thinks Louisville MBB can recover quickly, all it takes is the right HC hire. (link)
As on-leave Louisville AD Jurich circles the wagons in the Derby City, Auburn Undercover's Marcello says Tigers AD Jacobs is doing the same on The Plains. "...do not underestimate the power of friends in high places. The question is who new president Steven Leath listens to over the next few weeks and potentially few months. The internal investigation into basketball will determine a lot, and provide Leath the leeway needed to act — on basketball and the athletics director." Marcello wonders if it would be best for Jacobs to announce his retirement, ride off into the sunset after Christmas. (link)
Sounds like Georgia Tech AD Stansbury has gotten the nod from ACC Commish Swofford to replace Clemson AD Radakovich on the College FB Playoff committee starting next season. The CFP management committee has to approve all additions for what would be a three-year term. Stansbury: "As far as intercollegiate athletics goes, that’s one of those that, if provided the opportunity, you’d probably want to jump on it." (link)
LSU AD Alleva got in the same room with FB HC Orgeron, OC Canada & DC Aranda to try to right the ship for the 3-2 gridiron Tigers. While that may seem abnormal to some, it's not to Orgeron, "Joe and I meet all the time. We said let's bring in the coordinators. Let's talk to them and see what's going on because we feel that we have two very good coordinators. He wanted to know what was going on and what we can do better. We all got on the same page. It was a very positive meeting. I think the reason why Joe wanted to do it and I wanted to do it was because we're not playing well. We wanted to see what we can correct. We wanted to throw everything out on the table and it was very positive." (link)
With Idaho headed back in & North Dakota out, Big Sky ADs have been debating alignment scenarios, including one that would divide the 13-member conference into two divisions. Protecting rivalries, like Eastern Washington-Montana, is another key to the process & in one iteration each member would have three protected FB matchups. Eagles AD Chaves says his eye is on ensuring the most conducive path to FCS Playoffs access. (link)

Google's new $159 smart headphones, Google Pixel Buds, can do nearly real-time translation into 40 languages when tethered to an Android phone. With five hours of listening time on a single charge, the device comes in three different colors and a November ship date. Seems like a perfect purchase by those of you headed overseas & facing a language learning curve. (link)

New Alabama State Prez Ross names Deputy AD Williams as Interim AD, filling the vacancy left by recently resigned leader Hines. Ross: "Alabama State University is fortunate to have someone of Mrs. Williams's caliber to take this interim position. I am fully confident in her ability to lead our athletics department at this critical juncture." Williams: "I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve as the interim director of athletics and lead such a wonderful, accomplished group of student-athletes, coaches and staff that have carried on the long, storied history of Alabama State athletics." (link)
The Journal Gazette continues its look at the state of Eastern Illinois' department, this time with a focus on fundraising. The Panther Club currently generates between $600K-$700K & AD Michael thinks more can be done, "You are never ahead of the game, whether it’s scholarship or facilities. I don’t want to make it sound like money is the answer to all problems, but it does help things from a competitive standpoint. It’s an arms race at every level." Asst. AD for Development Nettles, whose background includes stops at Lock Haven (DII) & Learfield, points to positive messaging ("Together we ROAR") as one piece of the puzzle, wants to reach out to more former student-athletes who live outside the immediate area, stops short of pegging a number he thinks his group can reach. (link)
Utah Sr. Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Support Services/SWA Richardson will receive an Administrator of the Year Award at next week's Women Leaders in College Sports Convention. She is the highest-ranking African-American female in a college athletic department in the state and says her volleyball career - first as a student-athlete at Michigan State and later a coach of the sport - and the conscious decision to make a good impression, are a big part of her path to success: "You either adapt, migrate or perish." More: "You still have to be resilient, because there’s a lot that comes your way, and if let it stick, you won’t stay in this profession very long. … I’ve been told that I’m pretty tough, as far as thick skin and not letting a lot of things get to me. And very resilient." (link)
The Independence Bowl has a new title sponsor in Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar. Three-year pact. Walk-On's currently has 15 locations, 12 of which are in Louisiana, but has plans for 100 across Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee & Texas. Former LSU FB student-athlete Hester is part owner of two Walk-On's locations & helped to get everyone at the table. Trenches Sports & Entertainment executives Olecki & Shull negotiated the deal. (link)
ESPN/Amazon/Skinny: Michigan is getting $2.25M for its behind-the-scenes documentary that will run on Amazon. (link); ESPN has invested in linear & digital rights for Formula 1. Multi-year deal, 125+ hours of programming. (link); ESPN also does a deal with notable content creator Cycle to leverage the two networks for consumable branded content. (link); Another for the Worldwide Leader as former FOX personality Nolan has officially inked with Bristol after months of speculation. (link); Barstool's 'Pardon My Take,' super popular with the millennial crowd, may be headed to ESPN2 for a once per week slot. (link); Finally, The Information reports Sling, YouTube TV, Playstation Vue, Hulu & DirecTV Now have only combined to sign-up around 3.4M OTT subscribers. Not exactly world-changing numbers yet. (link)
Harvard Men's Soccer's hazing issues last year have been turned into a biz school case study & last week all 928 first-year Harvard Business School MBA students reviewed the particulars. Crimson AD Scalise endorsed the idea. Professor Coffman: "The reality is these issues come up. They come up at work. They come up at school, and we need to be able to talk about them with each other in a constructive way where we can learn from each other and share perspectives. […] We felt that it was a situation that a lot of people probably would have encountered in one form or another during some of their school years, athletics experience, work experience." Talk about 360-degree learning. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Cincinnati.com's Daugherty calls the job of COI chair for Xavier AD Christopher "thankless," as he takes over at a time when MBB & the industry as a whole is under an even brighter spotlight. Christopher's stance, "We’re not a business. If a business made decisions the way we make them sometimes, they’d be out of business. We’re uniquely American. No other place in the world pairs its high-level amateur athletics with higher education. There is some tension in the system. You try to make the best decisions for the institutions and the students. There are some inherent conflicts in that." A bit more. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd thinks broader, wonders if the HC candidacy of former Oregon/San Francisco 49ers/Philadelphia Eagles HC Kelly will take a hit with the recent MBB saga considering Kelly was himself sanctioned by the NCAA while in Eugene for alleged inappropriate relationships with prep coaches. Dodd: "At best, Kelly might be a test case to how scared college administrators are of the FBI banging on their doors. At worst, guys like Kelly - no matter how talented - might have problems finding work as a new normal settles over compliance departments." An unnamed FBS Compliance director, "You gotta understand, no matter what you hired him for, he may have restrictions." (link)
Sports Illustrated's Staples updates his piece on how the new early FB signing period could impact HC moves: 1) If the incoming recruiting class is "average to poor," Staples suggests making a decision as early as possible to "bring the new guy aboard the morning after his last game and get him recruiting that afternoon"; 2) If the incoming class is solid, waiting until the last minute to make a change could be productive, only so long as the new HC is announced shortly thereafter (e.g. Texas' seven hours between the official exit of former HC Strong & hire of new boss Herman). Staples uses Tennessee as the program example for his arguments. (link)
New Mexico Interim Prez Abdallah on Lobo FB student-athletes who took a knee during last weekend's game against Air Force, "These young men were put in a difficult situation and they quickly made the choice to show solidarity with the cause championed by players in the NFL. They did not break any laws – they exercised their rights as U.S. citizens. While some may or may not agree with the message, I fully support our student-athletes and their right to peacefully and legally express themselves. As an educational institution, we take every opportunity to learn and educate, and I hope that our community will appreciate that role and continue to help us bring our people together." (link); More at New Mexico as NMFishBowl.com's Libit goes deep once again, this time with rounds of allegations from sources on the behavior of FB HC Davie. (link)
More HC Notes: Retired means retired, per former Oklahoma FB HC Stoops: "You won't see me on a college sideline or a pro sideline. A lot of people act like they know, and there will be more than a few jobs out there. But that isn't at all what I'm looking to do." (link); South Carolina Volleyball HC Swanson's time in Columbia is through, exits with a 101-99 record in seven seasons. AC Hampton moved into Interim HC role. (link); Michigan Softball HC Hutchins, already going into her 34th season with the Wolverines, signs a five-year extension that provides for annual rollovers. (link); VMI Wrestling HC Skretkowicz announces his resignation after 11 years in Lexington. (link); Georgia Tech MBB HC Pastner gets a one-year extension taking him through 2022-23. No terms of the new agreement announced, but his original six-year deal calls for a $1.745M salary this season. (link); New Mexico MBB HC Weir says his squad will meet as a team regarding the National Anthem: "The one thing I do know, I feel very strongly about, is I want to do it as a team. Whatever we’re going to do, we’re all doing together. There’s no division in that regard." As New Mexico State's HC last year, Weir brought an African-American police officer and Marine to talk with his team before the Aggies, collectively, agreed to stand for the anthem. (link)
Also Noticed: The "Mean Green" of Michigan State was an honest error, per ESPN, and has been corrected. (link); The Title IX claims against North Dakota for the discontinuation of Women's Hockey, as well as Men's & Women's Swimming/Diving, have been dismissed. (link); Jacksonville will use North Florida's UNF Arena after Hurricane Irma damaged the roof of JU's Swisher Gym. (link); Belmont does a deal with Zipwhip "to elevate customer service." (link); Former Big 12 executive & CoSIDA Prez Carolla joins the 150th Anniversary of Football as Director of Communications. (link); Michigan State will not release the internal investigation connected to former doctor Nassar. (link); Check out the new lockers SMU will install for its FB student-athletes after this season. (link)
1.Question brought to you by Turnkey Search
New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia starts his two-part 1.Q with thoughts on how an athletic director at his/her alma mater has the ability to offer a different perspective to constituent groups than a leader from the outside. Moccia also touches on the 'change agent' nature of being an AD & how an inherent understanding of where an institution has been can be a major advantage. More from the Aggies' boss tomorrow.  Listen by clicking the link.
