October 2017 AGBC Munich Meeting:

Wednesday, 25 October - October AGBC Monthly Meeting, Marriott Hotel, Berlinerstr. 93, München, 1900-2200. Prof. Dr. Ulrike Reisach:  “Challenges in Today’s Transatlantic Business World.”

Opening Words from the President

Hi,

I commence this month on two sad notes, informing you of the recent passing of two long-time AGBC Munich members:

Heather Denise Rose died on 29 August while on vacation.  Denise was a US tax expert (e.g. 20 July 2015 Estate Planning panel) with a strong background as a Wirtschaftsprüfer and Steuerberater for German, UK and US (CPA) tax matters.  She had English and German nationality.

Phill Handy – died on the weekend of 30 Sep/1 Oct.  An American from Connecticut, Phill was an AGBC Board member in 2012, baseball enthusiast, entrepreneur, and most recently Managing Director of MakerSpace at the UnternehmerTUM. Instrumental in starting MakerSpace, he propelled its progress, and helped the TUM’s WARR (Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Raketentechnik und Raumfahrt) team win the highly acclaimed Hyperloop system design competition for ultra-high-speed human transport systems, as mentioned in our September newsletter.

We will dearly miss Denise’s constructive contributions to promoting German-American-English friendship and Phill’s great motivational spirit, determination and contributions to our German-American community here.

AGBC Events - Our 24 September AGBC Returns to Oktoberfest event was a great success.  We linked 190 members of the AGBC, German-Australian Business Council (GABC), Lions Club Munich Multinational, the Irish Business Network, the TripleD Events group, Munich alumni of Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management, and alumni of Southern California University.

Important note- for those with leftover Festhalle Schottenhamel food and Bier vouchers, these can be used until 31 October 2017 at Gutshof Menterschwaige in Harlaching or the Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige in Nymphenburg.  Please inform your waiter when ordering that you will be using these - or even better at the time you make your reservation.

For our September monthly meeting on Wednesday, 27 September, our special thanks go to Bernhard Kowatsch, Head of the Innovation Accelerator at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).  He addressed use of some of the latest in technology advances to provide “Innovations for Zero Hunger” and provided insights on innovative processes for growing food and the following logistics efforts.

Moving into the future, our 25 October monthly meeting will feature Prof. Dr. Ulrike Reisach of the Neu Ulm University of Applied Science who will provide a timely presentation on:  “Challenges in Today’s Transatlantic Business World.”  We welcome Ulrike; at our September 2013, she addressed “Knowledge – and How to Deal With It in American-German Businesses.”

On 18 November, AGBC National is holding its Annual General Meeting of the Association of American-German Business Clubs e.V. (AAGBC – AGBC National) in Heidelberg.

The 2017 AGBC Exchange II will be the core of our 29 November 2017 monthly meeting. This will feature Christian Ehl and Sharad Gandhi, co-authors of AI&U.  They will lead a thought–provoking dialogue on artificial intelligence and aspects related to economic inequality.  We mentioned Christian and Sharad’s book in our August 2017 AGBC Munich newsletter.

And before we close out our 2017 activities, we will again hold our annual AGBC Christmas Party on Monday, 11 December at the Donisl.

MING Events (Munich International Networking Group – www.ming-in-munich.com) -

Soul Sunday on Sunday, 8 October (1500-1900) at Restaurant Alter Wirt in Moosach.  The acclaimed Soul Crew will present their great soul, funk, and pop music from the 70’s to 90’s.

Concert Evening - Mozart Requiem – Saturday, 21 October starting at 2000 in the Herkulessaal in the Residenz.  This is the concert debut of the new partnership between the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bayerische Philharmonie.

Thanksgiving Dinner – Friday, 24 November at Restaurant Alter Wirt.  This is Linda Jo Rizzo's annual dining and entertainment evening.

Also there are a number of excellent upcoming theater productions presented by AGBC member Grantly Marshall and the American Drama Group, as listed in the event announcements snapshot section below with further details in the Announcements section for MING events.  .

Membership – Please join me in welcoming our new AGBC Munich members:  Hila Cohen and Bernhard Kowatsch.

Did’ya know?  - The HWWI-Berenberg Study 2017 has again named Munich the most dynamic city in Germany. Started in 2008, this annual report is prepared by the Hamburgische WeltWirtschaftsInstituts (HWWI) and private bank Berenberg.  It evaluates the development and sustainability of Germany's 30 largest cities and is based on several factors, including future trends in population growth, education, innovation, international focus, accessibility, and economic performance.

Munich’s economic prospects were rated well above average with a ripple effect into the surrounding region.  Demographic trends project that the number of people under 20 will increase more quickly than elsewhere in Germany with 16% population growth and an increase of 31,500 in employed persons by 2030.

Munich benefits from its excellent location and a high average education level - one third of the working population has a degree.  Nearly every second employee works in a knowledge-intensive industry, thus boosting Munich’s competitive position as an outstanding “knowledge metropolis”.  In order of ranking, the 4 runners up were Leipzig, Frankfurt, Dresden and Berlin.

An admin issue – Name/badge holders – if you have name/badge holders from our previous AGBC meetings, please be sure to bring these to an upcoming meeting.

And finally a heads up – For Germany and most of Europe, Summer Time ends on Sunday, 29 October.  The US changes on Sunday, 5 November.

All the best,
Larry

Danish Advances for Alternative Energy

Per the 27 September 17 edition of the Danish “State of Green” newsletter, central power plants are no longer necessary during summer months to keep the grid going when glitches in the system arise.  Denmark is a world leader in per capita use of clean technology applications.
By use of its world-class sun and wind energy resources, Denmark generated sufficient electricity during this past June to meet its daily needs.  For the first time, the Danish electricity grid operated without needing to keep power plants running.

Responsible for Denmark’s electricity grid, Energinet is using an approach focused on system-supporting characteristics to enable the grid to function without central power plants while coping with normal glitches in the system.  In the future, central power plants will be generally used mainly if the grid is weakened due to repairs to transmission lines or central system components or to provide power to remote areas of the country.

Expatriates Corner

German Bundestag (Parliament) 2017 elections were held 24 September.  There is great remaining work ahead to form the coalition government and elect the chancellor.  Here is a summary provided by the 29 September “The Week in Germany” newsletter.

When will the final election result be known?  Roughly 14 days after the election,
the Federal Electoral Committee will announce the final result.

How is a government formed?  Who is willing to govern with whom? Part of the election campaign involves extracting from the front-running candidates which other party (or parties) they would join forces with to form a government. A party has sole power only if it is elected with an absolute majority.  During the coalition discussions, the parties identify which compromises they are ready to make and which positions they will renounce. It can take weeks before it finally becomes clear who will govern and who will form the opposition. With 30 days after the election, the Bundestag must assemble for its constituent meeting, by which time the governing coalition has to be in place.

How is the federal chancellor elected?  The first important task for the new parliament is to elect the head of the government. The federal president proposes candidates; usually the candidates for chancellor are put forward by the coalition parties. Then the members of the Bundestag vote on the candidates in a secret ballot. A candidate needs to obtain an absolute majority to become chancellor. This “chancellor majority” gives the chancellor the legitimacy to conduct the business of government. The person elected is appointed chancellor by the federal president within 7 days, and is sworn in before the Bundestag.  If no absolute majority is obtained, a second round of voting is held within 14 days. However, all federal chancellors since 1949 have been elected in the first round.

What are the duties of the federal chancellor?  The federal chancellor determines the guidelines of government policy. He or she defines the number and duties of the ministries, appoints ministers and is their boss. The powers and leadership instruments of the German federal chancellor are comparable to those of a president in a presidential democracy.

Sharad Gandhi and Christian Ehl – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Implications for Economic Inequality

    Christian Ehl         Sharad Gandhi

When:   Wednesday, 29 November 2017
Time:    Registration starts 1830; meeting starts at 1900, dinner buffet around 2030.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an increasingly “hot” topic these days.  Sharad Gandhi and Christian Ehl participated on our 30 November 2016 AGBC Exchange II panel discussion that addressed:  “Innovation – Advances in Digitization, Digitalization and New Business Models.”  Since then they have been very busy finalizing their new book AI&U.  As masters in helping us understand many of the implications, they will demystify AI and help us start to identify approaches for harnessing its power for advancing our organizations’ progress.

Here is the core thrust of the book:  “The next technology to create the biggest and widest impact on all aspects of our lifestyle, industries, and society has arrived. It is Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its newly acquired magic of Machine Learning. AI is the next big thing and will transform all businesses. AI is inevitable. Its progress and disruptive power is evidenced in a number of areas – like Apple Siri, IBM Watson and Tesla cars. The use of AI for future competitiveness and survival is a must.”

In the process of writing their book Christian and Sharad talked to AI experts in Europe, USA and Asia - business leaders and non-technical people. Through their research and discussions, they explored many facets of AI while identifying interesting insights about AI, its applications, and how our natural human intelligence works.

While the advancements in AI enable high productivity, these also translate as wealth for creators which can cause economic inequality.  Those not leading the development in AI have less chance to compete. The health and longevity of a few may improve significantly while the rest of the population may fall behind.  We will discuss the risks of economic inequality and start to consider steps needed to mitigate these effects.

Sharad Gandhi is a technology philosopher and strategist for creating business value with digital technologies. By education, he is a physicist and electronics engineer and a marketing strategist by profession. He is a global citizen having lived and worked in Europe, USA and India for leading companies - Intel, IBM, Siemens and Tata. In spite of being passionate about technology, he is aware and concerned about problems that technology creates. However, he believes that eventually technologies like the Internet, AI, robotics, biotech, genetics, new materials and Space will help create innovations and solutions for many of our global problems in environment, energy, inequality, poverty, health, and demography

Christian Ehl is an Internet activist and experienced entrepreneur with a passion for technology and how it transforms our lives and the way we do business. He is working to leverage Artificial Intelligence for a good future by working with various start-ups and corporations on AI projects. In addition to this, he is also involved in the Breakthrough Innovation work with the United Nations and the DO School. Christian is an active business angel and CEO of Hillert Interactive. He holds an electronics engineering degree from the Technical University of Munich and an MBA from Wake Forest University.

MING Event - Concert Evening - Mozart Requiem – Saturday, 21 October

What:   Mozart Requiem - Concert debut of the new partnership between the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bayerische Philharmonie

When:  Saturday, 21 October 2017 beginning at 2000

Tickets:          Purchase via telephone (089 / 120 220 320), by E-mail (info@bayerische-philharmonie.de) or at Munich ticket (www.muenchenticket.de).

Discounts:     Available for students (50%) and members of the MING groups (10% when ordered by phone or E-mail (but not from München Ticket)) - please mention MING when you order.

The Bayerische Philharmonie invites MING to a special German-American classical concert celebrating the debut of a new partnership between the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bayerische Philharmonie.  The first part of this concert features the American guest conductor Laurence Golan with musicians from the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra performing together with musicians from the Symphonie Orchestra of the Bayerische Philharmonie.  They will perform the “Magnificat” from Franz Schubert.  Following the “Magnificat” you will hear the choir of the Bayerische Philharmonie performing “Prayers Without Words” presented by the American composer Laurence Traiger.

During the second part of this concert evening, the Bayerische Philharmonie will perform a composition of Mozart’s “Requiem.”  In a most beautiful, dark, menacing and mysterious, way, Mozart's last, still unfinished work leaves us today with many questions. The music of the "Requiem" bears tremendous intensity. The unusual circumstances of the composition and the temporal context of the requiem mass with Mozart's early death have inspired myth-making.  This mystery will make this autumn evening  a powerful and intense experience, one featuring soloists (soprano) Carmela Konrad, Ulrike Andersen (alt), Andreas Weller (tenor) and Alexander Kiechle (bass), as well as the choir and Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Philharmonic under the direction of Mark Mast.

As a special treat for the MING guests, you can participate in a concert introduction with the conductors in German and English language which will take place about an hour before the concert begins.

In addition, the event features All-American entertainment and music by Munich’s acclaimed international entertainers Mark Coonradt and Linda.

While our MING get-together will be on 24 November, Der Alter Wirt and Linda also will host a similar Thanksgiving dinner event on the evening of 23 November (US Thanksgiving Day).

     Now, that’s some turkey!

2017 English Book Sale – Save the Date

When:     Friday 13 October 1500-1900, Saturday 14 October from 1100 -1500.
Where:    Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium, Jagdfeldring 82, 85540 Haar.

FRIENDS OF THE ENGLISH BOOK SALE - Not long now till the summer vacation and lazy days with plenty of time to catch up on your reading. Please make a point of holding on to any English literature that you've read but don't need to keep - you'll have an opportunity to recycle it in aid of the Ilembula Project in Tanzania at the 2017 English Book Sale.

This year‘s sale will again be taking place at our new, more spacious, venue in the Ernst Mach Gymnasium in Haar; the school also supports various initiatives in Ilembula, Tanzania, and has again kindly made its premises available to us for the sale. Judging by your comments last year, both you and the volunteer helpers found these new light and airy premises very suited to our needs – precise details about how to get there will be sent out in September.

As usual the English Book Sales team asks you to support their cause by donating English books and DVDs for which you have no further use and which are still in good sellable condition. Please note in your calendars that the team we will ask for your donations between Saturday 23rd September and Saturday 7th October – this gives them time to sort and price the donations (which tend to run into several thousand) before the actual sale. They will mail you further details of where and when to bring your donations nearer the date. At the sale you will then be able to stock up on your English reading matter in the happy knowledge that every cent you spend on books and DVDs will be used to support needy families and orphans in Tanzania.

Thank you all for your continuing support.  The people in Ilembula certainly appreciate your help.  Last year and this year our biggest project, after supplying the orphans with the necessities, is supplying every school in the area around Ilembula, Tanzania with a stove. This accomplishes two things: the children get a warm meal of porridge and we reduce deforestation by providing the schools with a stove that uses 50% less wood. Deforestation is a major problem in that area, and using less wood also saves the schools money.

We wish you a very enjoyable and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you and your friends in the autumn.
