Turning inwards amongst the chaos - Finding a 'Retreat' inside or outside.

What is it that we are all looking for, craving and desiring in our day to day life? Many of us would say 'to slow down', 'turn inwards' and experience some 'peace and stillness'.

With so many extreme events happening around us and our constant exposure and knowledge of them, it is sometime challenging to find inner calm and be positive about our life. Do we shield ourselves from the many catastrophic world events? Retreat inside ourselves for self preservation? How do we manage to affect change or assistance when we often feel impotent within the limits of our capacity. Aside from whats happening outside ourselves, coping with daily life can feel overwhelming, raising children, working, finances, family, health, being busy and feeling stretched. We want to make sense of our lives and remember what makes us whole and healthy.

In this current time most of us are searching for 'quiet' within our lives. We want to feel connect to others, that we are contributing to humanity and the greater good, that we have the tools to reconnect with a deeper sense of self.

We can find the things that help to 'bring us back to ourselves', help us 'remember who we are', knowing that if we are positive, generous and living the life we imagined then our relationship to the world begins to shift.

Giving yourself time away from 'ordinary' life is vital to connect and be still. Out of this space we gain clarity to experience self actualisation, becoming more fulfilled and positive about life and the world. Lets invite ourselves to feel the beauty of life existence.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness really is a current buzz word, which is fabulous because it can only be beneficial with the practice of it. What does the word mean and what is it?

Mindfulness - definition

1. a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

Mindfulness suggests that the mind is fully attending to what’s happening, to what you’re doing, to the space you’re moving through. Without practice, what normal happens is that, our mind takes flight, we lose touch with our body, we become engrossed in obsessive thoughts about something that just happened or fretting about the future. This can make us feel anxious and overwhelmed.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

When we’re mindful, we reduce stress, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention to others’ well-being.

"Mindfulness practice gives us a time in our lives when we can suspend judgment and unleash our natural curiosity about the workings of the mind, approaching our experience with warmth and kindness—to ourselves and others."

Mindful techniques include;

  • Mediation
  • Breath practice - Pranayama
  • Yoga
  • Prayer and chanting
  • Walking in nature
  • Attending daily tasks with intention and awareness
