October Update

Hi folks,

I don't believe it, but it's October already.
I think I'm getting old as the time seems to fly by.    Be that as it may, we have a fantastic October coming up,
- October 13-15 Foggy Mountain Bluegrass Festival , Kinglake
- October 24th - 'Mile Twelve' Bluegrass band form the USA, with special guests 'Nine Mile Creek' at the Ferntree Gully Bowls Club
- October 31 - Last Tuesday Club Night at the Ferntree Gully Bowls Club, featuring Appalachian Heaven

First up, thanks to everyone that came along to the September Club night, The Davidson Brothers Band put on a great show.
It was one of the biggest nights at Mountain Pickers and thanks to the boys it was a great night.    I should also say a big thanks to the 5 other bands that played on the night. Without all these bands prepared to donate there time and talent it would be a very short night.

Now,  let's talk about Foggy Mountain Bluegrass Festival.
It's a great festival an hour out of Melbourne in Kinglake.  Lots of venues and more bands than you can see in a weekend
Not only is there a bush dance on friday night, there's even a beard competition for those of you who are a little more hirsute than the rest of us. (you know who you are)!
If you wish to learn stuff, there are a lot of workshops on lots of different instruments to go to.         If you just want to listen, the concerts start on Friday night and go all weekend, finishing at 9pm Sunday night.
Some of the bands appearing are , The Davidson Brothers, Slim Dime, Nine Mile Creek, The Knott Family Band, The Macedon Rangers, The Strzlecki Stringbusters, The Stetson Family and a host of others too many to mention.
That line up alone is worth the trip.
For all your Foggy Mountain information visit their website or Facebook page.

Next up lets have a look at a special Mountain Pickers event.

On October 24th direct from the USA we have one of the best young bluegrass bands coming to entertain.
'MILE TWELVE' is a fresh, hard driving young band beautifully walking the line between original and traditional bluegrass.
Fast gaining recognition for their outstanding performances in bluegrass and folk circles, Evan Murphy, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Nate Sabat, BB Bowness and David Benedict write captivating songs and daring instrumental pieces from diverse influences. Banjo luminary Tony Trischka says, "Mile Twelve is carrying the bluegrass tradition forward with creativity and integrity."
Come and see the best of the young bluegrass pickers doing their stuff.
You'll see that bluegrass music is in good hands for the future.

Oh, by the way 'Nine Mile Creek' will be there to fly the flag for the Aussies and play a small set of their tunes.

Glenfern Rd, Ferntree Gully

For those of you that got last months emails, you already know I suffer from premature email syndrome and have already seen the information about The Last Tuesday Club night for October.  For those of you who missed out on the 3 emails sent prematurely I'll attempt to get the information correct this month.

This month's feature artist is APPALACHIAN HEAVEN.
The Appalachian Heaven Stringband is well known for it’s tight, driving arrangements of tunes and songs from the southern Appalachian USA mountains.  The Stringband is the precursor of Bluegrass, featuring fiddle, banjo and vocal harmonies transposed from the Celtic fiddle traditions, infused with African-American cultures, and rural sensibilities.   Appalachian mountain music played with gusto and authenticity, learnt directly from the masters during regular visits to the USA. From sensitive and driving fiddle tunes, dance tunes with curly toes, to cheeky songs and disarmingly touching ballads, Appalachian Heaven Stringband delight audiences young and young-at-heart.
Appalachian Heaven has now expanded to be a 5 piece band, adding more layers to that old time sound. I'm looking forward to hearing cello added to the mix
There are two other things that haven't been said so far, and they are -
They're entertaining and it's great music to dance to.

October 31st
7:30 at the Ferntree Gully Bowling Club
Glenfern Rd, Ferntree Gully
Entry $15/$12 and $10 for MPA Members -

As you can see, it's a bumper month for bluegrass lovers.
Keep an eye on the website for the latest news and updates because November is shaping up to be even bigger.

Thats enough for now,
Hope to see you all at Kinglake or the Home of Mountain Pickers, Ferntree Gully Bowls Club
Happy picking

Andrew Barcham
