Watch - What's It Like As A First-Time Athletic Director?
Louisville: Momentum is building for a return for AD Jurich as former Board of Trustee member & major athletics donor Patterson, whose name adorns the Cards' Baseball facility, pens to Prez Postel. Patterson reviews all the accomplishments under Jurich's watch, finishes with, "We are flying at 40,000 feet...does it make sense to shut the engines off?" (link); Another key contributor, notable local eye doctor Lynn, he of Soccer's Lynn Stadium, does the same to Postel. (link); UofL's Board of Trustees & Athletic Association board will both meet this morning at 9a & 1p, respectively. "Litigation & personnel matters" noted as topics for both. (link); Here's the full BoT agenda. (link); Former MBB HC Pitino: "Right now it’s in the lawyers’ hands. I went to Miami. I’m selling my house (in Louisville). I love David Padgett. I love the boys. I hope they win the national championship. I’m not doing anything but laying low." Says "it doesn't matter" if he's 'Coach 2' or not, also adds he had "(zero) to do with any of it and I’ll be vindicated." (link); MBB student-athlete Bowen, in question for allegedly accepting $100K to commit to the Cards, has hired legal representation in Miami-based attorney Setchen who was previously involved in the Nevin Shapiro case at Miami (FL). Bowen remains on the Louisville campus. (link); WDRB's Crawford pens a letter to Louisville fans, reviews the history of athletics & builds the story of how UofL's brand became a national player. In closing, "Regardless of who is in charge, this university and program belong to the people in this community. They are bigger than any one man, or any two. It’s easy to forget that. None of us should." (link)
The Wall Street Journal's Davis O'Brien, Beaton & Costa with an in-depth look at former financial advisor Blazer, who is at the center of the current MBB bribery saga. Blazer's willingness to get involved started back in the Fall of 2014 as he looked to lessen his sentence tied to securities fraud, though at the time Blazer considered the strategy to ensnare those in MBB a long shot. Blazer was introduced to former NBA ref & high-end clothier Michael by an agent, which led to a meeting with then-ASM Sports runner Dawkins & on to then-South Carolina MBB AC Evans. "By last October, Mr. Evans hadn’t produced any clients for Mr. Blazer, and the investigation seemed stagnant, according to a complaint and people familiar with the matter." Enter Auburn AC Person. The FBI entered the picture last fall & Person's phone was wiretapped by December. (link)
The AP's Russo catches up with Alabama AD Byrne as he works through his first FB season in Tuscaloosa. "What you have when you have a high-profile coach and an athletics director is you want to have a good partnership in working together. 'How can we help support him as the head coach of our football program that we continue to be able to perform at a very high level. That's what my focus has been." Saban says the best ADs he's been around know how to work with & support HCs. More Byrne, who notes the coming five-year strategic plan for the Crimson Tide, "I may not wear a checkered red and blue coat to a game like I did at Arizona, but I take what I do very seriously. I really don't take myself that seriously. The only thing I've got figured out is I really don't have it all figured out. I've learned a lot just watching coach Saban from a leadership standpoint." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Since leaving Nebraska in 1982, Huskers Interim AD Rimington has traveled to 93 countries and six continents taking with him a Sony Alpha 7R camera to capture his adventures. Long read here from The Kearney Hub's Chatelain, but a detailed look at the life and times of Rimington, who calls the AD chambers in Memorial Stadium, which is larger than his three-bedroom apartment in NYC, "over the top... must be for recruits." (link)

UTEP FB HC Kugler steps down from his post & the biggest question surrounding his replacement is who will make the hire with AD Stull on his way out. Per the El Paso Times' Bloomquist, university Prez Natalilcio  wants to have a new athletics boss named by early next month. (link); The Athletic's Vannini reviews the Miners' opportunity, "If the AD search drags on, could Stull make the hire on his way out? This, more than anything else, will have the biggest impact on the search." ESPN's Rittenberg says Northern Arizona AD Campos is a name to watch. (link, link)
Weekend Review: Sports Illustrated's Staples says Tennessee AD Currie is in an unenviable position given the performance of his FB program under HC Jones. Wonders if Georgia's lopsided win over the Vols is akin to when Clemson thumped Miami (FL) two seasons ago, which led to exit of then-Canes HC Golden. "Deciding whether to fire a coach who has won nine games the previous two seasons is tough enough, and the first football hire of an AD’s tenure also starts the clock on said AD’s tenure." Staples also reviews how the new early signing window for prospective FB student-athletes could impact coaching moves. More. (link); USA Today's Wolken tops his weekly 'Misery Index' with LSU. Like many, questions what LSU brass was thinking in the hiring of HC Orgeron. Others in the Top 5: Tennessee, BYU, North Carolina & Mississippi State. (link); Here's the popular 'Forde-Yard Dash' from the Yahoo namesake. (link)
Disney & Altice are close to a deal as the two have agreed to extend their negotiating window to finalize all the details. Per Bloomberg, "Disney is said to have won price increases for major channels." 2.4M subs in the New York City area are Altice subscribers & the agreement will keep ESPN on their airwaves. Altice will carry the SEC Network & ACC Network, though it will drop a lower-rated ESPN channel, per reports. Interesting story to watch as a potential bellwether for more upcoming carriage conversations. (link)
The Albuquerque Journal's Harrison explores the circumstances and confusion regarding five New Mexico FB student-athletes kneeling for the national anthem during halftime of the team's game against Air Force over the weekend. The student-athletes were not available for comment after the game, but Assistant AD of Communications Mercogliano says they could talk to the media on Tuesday if they so choose. Harrison says the availability would be a step in the right direction for UNM: "When new athletic director Eddie Nuñez made his introductory speech to the Lobo Nation recently, he said 'transparency' more than once. It’d be great if he stretches its definition beyond just the inner workings of his new job, and that it includes even more opportunities for us, the community and the media, to get to know the Lobos in all sports." (link)
Does every college FB program have this guy? New York Yankees coaching assistant Weber, who makes the decision whether or not to challenge a call on the field, is profiled by the New York Post. In the four seasons since Major League Baseball instituted the replay review system, the Yankees lead the league in successful challenges at 74.7%. Manager Girardi says Weber's eagle eye gives his club an edge on the competition: "You don’t ever want to feel like you lost a game because of replay. With how crazy playoff races can be, it can come down to one game, one call. And he gives us an advantage." (link)
The SEC honored Kentucky's Northington and Vanderbilt's Wallace - the first two African-American student-athletes from the league - with a touching video on Saturday attached to this Tweet: "History was made on this day 50 years ago. We salute Nate Northington, Perry Wallace and more. #ItJustMeansMore" The video, in part: "While we look back we are reminded there is only one way we will all keep moving forward: together." MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Having recently completed his first three-year strategic plan, Colorado AD George announced the next one: "I am excited to be able to share the 2018-20 Strategic Plan for the University of Colorado Athletic Department. Our mission over the next 36 months is that, 'CU Athletics will win championships by recruiting, developing and inspiring student-athletes to succeed academically, athletically and personally through leadership and advancing our culture of excellence.'" The previous plan covered three main areas: financial, competitiveness and academic/personal development, while this new one, with "the right head coaches in place," will focus more on competitiveness, "We are creating new programming with the intent of driving better results on the fields and courts of competition as well as the overall holistic health and wellness of our diverse student-athletes." A 90% graduation success rate and an APR of 983 or higher are among the new goals. (link)
Over the summer, current and past members of the Wright State Swimming & Diving program raised nearly $100K of the $85K the school told them was needed to save the Raiders program, but community member Auckerman says the university gave seemingly false promises.  Nicholette Measle, a mother of a S&D student-athlete after the May announcement that her son's team was being cut: "It was out of the blue, so we didn't even really know how to prepare for it. ... shocking, every emotion you can think of really." And now that the funds have been raised, Measle: "It's almost sad that Wright State felt like these kids weren't worth it, but complete strangers did." (link)
Legal Matters: Citing timing and a two-year statute of limitations, U.S. District Judge Pitman "granted Baylor’s motion to dismiss Title IX claims, negligence and gross negligence claims while granting plaintiff Dolores Lozano’s motion to amend her suit to add claims for negligent hiring, retention and supervision." A statement from Baylor: "Baylor is pleased that the Court has granted the university’s motion to dismiss relating to the plaintiff’s initial allegations under Title IX and of negligence and gross negligence. We look forward to aggressively responding to the remaining allegation of negligent hiring and training once formally filed by the plaintiff." (link); Former Baylor Interim Prez Garland made headlines last week for his comments in an email from June 2016 that said victims of sexual assault "may seem willingly to make themselves victims," but the school has come to his defense, saying the email was misrepresented. "[The plaintiffs] impose their own interpretation of the Bible and literally put words into Dr. Garland’s mouth that were never uttered. Dr. Garland’s email did not state any sexual assault victim was 'at fault' or that any such victim was assaulted ‘due to some use of alcohol for purposes of adventure.' ... In this context, Dr. Garland’s discussion in this email of the impacts of alcohol as they relate to sexual violence is an appropriate consideration and reflects the complexity of the issues."(link); Saleeha Soofi, the woman who accused former Kansas MBB student-athlete of punching and shoving her in December 2016, was later charged for being the aggressor in the situation as charges against Bragg were dropped. Last week she pleaded guilty to the battery charge and will get six months probation. (link)
Another key note in Nebraska's AD search: The Board of Regents will offer system Prez Bounds a contract extension through the 2020-21 academic year. The plan for the additional year does not come with a salary bump, as he got a 6.3% increase last year, bringing his salary to $510,400 plus a privately-funded $20K. (link)
Also Noticed: In addition to the student-athletes from New Mexico who took a knee during the National Anthem, a Georgia Tech cheerleader did the same, as did band members from Cornell & Brown. (link); From Cynopsis Sports: "In college football, Nielsen overnights showcased that ABC televised the highest-rated game of the week with Saturday Night Football featuring Clemson/Virginia Tech earned a 3.0 overnight. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Friday night matchup featuring USC/Washington State drew a 2.2 overnight to mark cable’s best overnight of week five." (link); New UNC Wilmington WBB HC Barefoot: "I’ve always had a great connection with (UNCW Athletic Director) Jimmy Bass. I’ve always thought he was a tremendous leader. Our paths have crossed several times, and I’ve always thought a lot of him." (link); Troy FB HC Brown on his program's win at LSU, "If you can bottle up that feeling and sell it, you'd make yourself a fortune. Accomplishing a task that so many people thought was unattainable. To go in and create silence in one of the hardest places to play in college football, it's unbelievable." (link)
