Strained Carrier Capacity During Record High Load Demand
The good news is that there is a record high amount of loads across the country in need of drivers-and fast! The not so good news is that there are not nearly enough trucks to cover them, with the lowest availability in coverage seen in years. Current carrier capacity and equipment availability is extremely limited in virtually every region of North America. FTL, LTL, Rail and Drayage transportation across all equipment types and across the country are experiencing the greatest shortage in driver availability in over a decade. This is due to a number of variables which affect current market conditions, some of which include this year’s active and devastating hurricane season, an ongoing driver shortage, the upcoming holiday season, a Driver Strike planned to start next week, and the upcoming ELD Mandate.

Hurricanes:
Harvey and Irma caused a surge of freight in the south after the ports were cleared and shippers were up and running – This has resulted in an overabundance of loads to keep drivers busy across the country which ultimately means they have their pick of what they want to run, when they want to run it, and what rate they are going to run it for.

Holiday Season:
This is a peak season shipping cycle. With the holidays coming up and an excess of demand due to the strengthened economy, there is a large volume of available freight to carriers that are already straining their capacity.

Driver Strike/ELD Mandate:
There is a planned strike next week to protest the ELD mandate. We could see severely limited capacity if participation in this is as wide spread as carriers are expecting.
This strike is estimated to occur 10/03 – 10/08 and will impact capacity.

Please note that rates are expected to be significantly higher, as coverage is becoming scarcer and requiring higher rates to secure availability.

We will continue to dig in our heels and do everything we can to move cargo as expediently as possible during these times. While it will get better, it is to be expected to get worst first as relief efforts are on-going which have severely impacted the market, along with the holiday season underway.
