BUA NEWS AND NOTES
October 3, 2017
IN THIS ISSUE:
A Note from Katie Kozin '00, Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement

Climbing Tower. Inclusive. High ropes. Bravery. War canoe. Confidence. Friendships. Perseverance. Beach barbecue. New experiences. Campfire. Respect. Low ropes. Strength. Taking care of each other. Leadership. Night hike. Team building.

Oh, and “ridiculously amazing,” courtesy of Dave Stone (who has been to every single BUA camp experience, so he knows what he is talking about). What do these words all have in common? Camp Burgess!

Last week, our ninth and tenth graders spent three days at Camp Burgess in Sandwich, MA for the school’s annual fall camp retreat. A team of camp “gurus” facilitated the activities, and I had the pleasure of being one of the nine BUA chaperones. Most of you know that I am a BUA alumna, but because I transferred into the school as a junior, I never had the chance to go to camp with BUA as a student. But I finally got my chance, and it completely exceeded my expectations.

The spirit with which our students joyfully and passionately approach learning in the classroom was the same spirit with which they fully embraced the Camp Burgess experience, including challenges ranging from fear of heights to humidity to working as a team on the low ropes course. You would have never guessed that our ninth graders have known each other for only a month. And our tenth graders got to step up and enjoy a brief taste of being upperclassmen, as they encouraged and looked out for their younger peers. I came away from the three days at camp with vivid memories (including an encounter with the largest pack of wild turkeys I’ve ever seen), countless moments of laughter, and a new understanding and appreciation of how awesome, fun, intelligent, and kind BUA students really are.

To say it more simply, Camp Burgess was everything I hoped it would be for our students, and then some.
Check out the pictures here! And sign me up for next year, please.

From Dr. Betof:

"In the wake of this week's tragic shooting in Las Vegas, I wanted to pass along some resources from the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) on talking to children in the aftermath of violence and trauma.  I hope you will find these resources useful in discussing these hard-to-talk-about issues with your children and family."
