BC Academic Health Science Network News
The BC Academic Health Science Network (BC AHSN) is pleased to provide the following update on current activities within the BC AHSN organization, which includes Clinical Trials BC and the BC SUPPORT Unit.

Our update on activities for the month of September includes:

Update on BC AHSN CEO search

Following the decision to expand the search for BC AHSN’s founding CEO beyond British Columbia, BC AHSN’s Board has selected Boyden Canada to conduct an active, targeted international search for qualified leaders with specific AHSN or related experience.

Financial support available for SoCRA certification

As part of its commitment to increase the number of skilled clinical research professionals in BC, Clinical Trials BC is supporting individuals to become certified by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA). Administered by the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS) on behalf of Clinical Trials BC, the program offers reimbursement of 80% of the SoCRA certification exam fee for up to 25 clinical research professionals at BC-based academic research sites. Applications are now being accepted for the next certification exam, set for February 2, 2018. Learn how to register.

Excellent uptake for provincial N2 access

We’re pleased to report that many BC organizations have signed up to become members of N2 under the new provincial membership. The membership provides access to N2’s extensive suite of online clinical research tools (such as SOPs), content and access to CITI Canada courses such as Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Part of a one-year agreement with N2 provided by Clinical Trials BC in partnership with the BC SUPPORT Unit, the provincial membership helps build clinical trials capacity and expertise.

New organizational members are:
  • First Nations Health Authority
  • Interior Health
  • Northern Health
  • Simon Fraser University
  • Thompson Rivers University
  • University of Northern British Columbia
  • University of Victoria
Under the agreement, support for independent investigators is also being offered for the first time. To date, more than a dozen independent investigators across BC have signed up. For more information, please contact Deirdre Rogers.

Rewarding Success initiative launched

The BC SUPPORT Unit recently announced the Rewarding Success Initiative, led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research through the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR). Rewarding Success is a multi-phased experimental funding model that is being piloted in five provinces: BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland & Labrador.

Rewarding Success was designed to produce interventions that will result in cost savings and/or improved efficiencies in Canada’s health care system. This initiative is similar to other funding models that have been developed to support innovation and impact, such as risk sharing, social impact bonds, and innovation prizes.

BC SUPPORT Unit Fraser Centre offers new awards

The BC SUPPORT Unit’s Fraser Centre has launched a Planning Award for patient-oriented research or knowledge translation projects. Applications are open to patients, researchers, health practitioners, or decision makers who work or live (patient) in the area Fraser Health serves, including satellite campuses such as SFU Harbour Centre.

These awards complement the P2P Awards offered through the BC SUPPORT Unit’s Provincial Hub, in partnership with the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.

Planning sessions inform Methods Cluster development

Planning events were held in September to help inform the future development and activities of two of the BC SUPPORT Unit’s Methods Clusters.

Methods Clusters are the primary ‘science’ pillar of the BC SUPPORT Unit. The mandate of the clusters is to advance the evidence base of the scientific methods used within the areas listed below by fostering a community of methodologists to undertake projects within the context of patient-oriented research.

The Real World Clinical Trials (RWCT) Methods Cluster Planning Event attracted approximately 40 attendees representing the Unit's four stakeholder groups: patients, researchers, health care providers and health system decision makers.

The Health Economics and Simulation Modelling (HESM) Methods Cluster Planning Event provided a collaboration opportunity for approximately 30 patients, researchers and health authority staff members from throughout BC.

Sign up for bi-weekly updates from the BC SUPPORT Unit.
Join us on November 9th at the BC SUPPORT Unit’s inaugural provincial conference.
