A workshop for private, public and charter school teachers offering techniques on teaching history in the classroom.  Sessions will include Introduction to World History and Hawaiian History and a sample history lesson on Martin Luther King and Civil Rights Movement by Dr. Mitch Yamasaki from Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Humanities and the Legacy of Race & Ethnicity in the United States and in Hawai‘i

The focus of the Humanities and the Legacy of Race and Ethnicity in the United States and in Hawai‘i workshop is centered on addressing topics of civil rights and racism in the classroom.  This workshop will allow teachers to learn to navigate through sensitive topics to assist with critical thinking and providing opportunities for students to see the relevance of these complex issues stemming from past U.S. history and how this affects the present and in their own lives.

This workshop is geared towards U.S. History, Language Arts teachers as well as teachers of Modern History of Hawai‘i.  Classroom techniques will be discussed as it relates to the topics of race and ethnicity in correlation to the DOE standards.

Local and Global History Using Local Literature

The Local and Global History Using Local Literature teacher workshop will feature locally published novels, poems and biographies as tools to aid in teaching local, American and world history.  This will include looking at how to address difficult subjects such as racism, genocide and imperialism in the classroom, as well as using fiction and non-fictional writing in teaching about history.  One benefit teachers will learn firsthand is the emotional and engaging power of such writing to get students personally involved in the subject matter.

Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute

Applications Due: November 27, 2017

National History Day presents the Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute which provides students and teachers with a life-changing look at the sacrifice Americans made in Normandy, France.

If selected, fifteen student/teacher teams will engage in months of rigorous study of D-Day and World War II.  In June, teams will travel to Washington D.C. where students and teachers will be immersed in lectures and scholarly study of the war memorials in the D.C. area.

In the final leg of the program, the group will travel to France to walk in the footsteps of history in Normandy, as well as present on the findings that they have studied throughout the year.  On the last day in Normandy, the students will present a eulogy at the grave of a Silent Hero buried at the Normandy American 
Cemetery based on individual research of a member of the U.S. military who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Students and teachers must apply as one team.

All Applicants must be available to participate in the Normandy institute from June 17 - 28, 2018.


Materials and most travel fees are covered for all accepted teams!


Gilder Lehrman National History Teacher of the Year  

Help us find the 2018 National History Teacher of the Year!

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the 
Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities is now seeking nominations for outstanding K-12 teachers who find creative ways to bring history alive in the classroom and in their community.

The national winner will receive a $10,000 prize and attend a ceremony in their honor in New York City.

State winners will receive a $1,000 prize, an archive of classroom resources, and recognition at a ceremony in their state. Each State History Teacher of the Year also becomes a finalist for the national award.

The deadline for 2018 nominations is March 31, 2018.

The deadline for 2018 nominees to submit supporting materials is April 30, 2018.
