OCTOBER 2017

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter: info@UNdesigners.org

Data visualisation at the Palais

We have the pleasure to announce that Alan Smith, responsible for data visualisation at the Financial Times, will be giving a talk this October 18 at 14:00 in Palais des Nation in Room XI. He is a truly data visualisation evangelist, as you can see in his blog at FT, as well as in his TED talks. The topic will be about "Moving from decoration to information: using graphics to enlighten" and attendance is open to anyone interested in the subject. Please contact Vadim Isakov for any further queries. See you there!

Unesco stats driven by Form + Function

Two months ago we highlighted this website for the ONE foundation. Now, the same agency FFunction (Form+Function) from Montreal show us the work done for the Unesco Institute for Statistics. Its latest collaboration is about showing countries expenditure in R&D. The website is a good example on simple ways of interactively displaying accessible information. Worth having a look to the entire FFunction portfolio to see how much good work they've put together in the last few years.

Awards for a better world

We're glad to see how concerns on creating a better world populate the list of Nominees for the Design Museum Beazley Designs of the Year awards. From 3D printed electric buses to ink made out of pollution, it's all really impressive. We want to highlight the Graphics category nominees, with UN Women campaigns or the Refugee Nation branding projects, both treated in this newsletter. Plus for those who love long-form storytelling, this one-off, ad-free issue of The New York Times Magazine devoted to the last ten years in the Middle East.

October Inspiration
A day
October 7 is celebration day for the UN community in Geneva. That rare occasion when we can stroll around our workplace and just enjoy the multiple activities set up around the Palais.
A poster collection
Isn't great when fellow designers take notice on what we do? Latest by-invitation-only AGI meeting in Paris hosted a poster exhibition, with seventeen works related to the seventeen SDGs.
A talk
October 18 is the next date in the calendar for the Digital Strategy + UX Meetup. Speakers will be Right Here Right Now (Virtual Reality) and Antistatique (User Experience).
An infographic
Ferdio do infographics. Lots of them. Projects like the dataviz website help us understanding charts. And their country flags study proves infographics can help analysing any given subject.
A (happy) show
The most awaited show finally opens this October 27 at Museum für Gestaltung. Stefan Sagmeister celebrated exhibition analyzing happiness will be on until March 2018.
A website
Global Pulse is the initiative of the UN on big data. Its latest project with UNHCR uses storytelling and big data to explain migration patterns of refugees arriving in Europe by sea.
Have you joined our FB Group page? we want to use it as a platform to communicate more regularly, transfer knowledge and share our work. Hope to see you there!
