Clearford signs MOU with India’s Tata infrastructure group

Clearford Water Systems and its subsidiary Clearford India Pvt. Ltd. have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tata Projects Limited (TPL) to explore opportunities for the Clearford One® system as a sanitation solution in small- and medium-sized communities in India and international markets.

The agreement reinforces the parties’ commitment to jointly pursue opportunities to deliver wastewater infrastructure projects in India and globally on a non-exclusive basis. Project specific MOU’s will be put in place between the parties as individual projects are confirmed. Clearford and TPL will undertake discussions with interested States to advance opportunities for Clearford One installations with initial efforts focused on the States of Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan.

The Clearford One system can bring modern sanitation infrastructure to urban areas without the high water demand that conventional sewers require to transport sewage solids to the treatment plant—an extremely important benefit for communities with scarce water supplies.

Instead, up to 75% of the solids are removed from the wastewater in underground ClearDigest® tanks. Liquid wastewater can then be conveyed through smaller sewer pipes installed at lower slope, requiring fewer pumping stations. Once treated in a low-energy ClearRecover® constructed wetland, clean effluent can be reused for agricultural irrigation or to recharge groundwater resources to further decrease demands on local water supplies.

Tata Projects is an engineering, procurement and construction services company of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest and most respected business groups with revenues of over $100 billion and over 581,000 employees worldwide. Its presence and success in India, South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa have made TPL one of India’s fastest growing infrastructure companies reputed for its industrial and urban infrastructure projects that leverage technology, advanced construction methods and collaboration between diverse specialists to ensure quality and execution of projects.

TPL has identified the Clearford One technology to expand its range of offerings for municipal infrastructure projects and significantly strengthen the company’s environmental, social and economic commitments.

Jambudiyapura village to take over operations of Clearford One system

Local operators in Jambudiyapura, Gujarat are preparing to assume full responsibility for the village’s Clearford One sanitation solution, which celebrates the completion of one year of operation in October. Throughout this first year, Clearford’s team in India has been operating and optimizing the plant, while also training and supervising operators from the village.

Once fully trained, members of the Village Sanitation Committee will be able to proficiently operate, maintain and troubleshoot the low-energy, low-complexity Clearford One system. Clearford’s in-country team will continue to monitor the system performance and be available to lend operational support if required.

“The Sanitation Committee is determined to operate the system to the best of their ability and ensure a high level of sustainable performance for future generations,” says Sanjay Deshpande, Executive Director, Clearford India Pvt. Ltd. “To ensure their success, we designed Clearford One for ease of use, and incorporated simple components that are familiar and serviceable by the local team. This will help operators to quickly learn tasks, perform them efficiently and easily teach others.”

Water-related illness falls to zero
Their commitment is reinforced by the dramatic health benefits that Jambudiyapura has experienced since commissioning the Clearford One system, according to Deshpande. “Over the past year, the incidence of water-related illness has dropped to virtually zero,” he says. “Prior to the installation of Clearford One, the villagers say that water-related illness was very common—somebody was always sick—but not anymore.”

Villagers are also benefitting financially and in overall quality of life, since reduced illness eliminates the need to travel to distant cities for medical attention and the associated loss of income.

The Clearford One system in Jambudiyapura services 53 homes and uses a soil-based biological treatment system to produce high quality effluent that is safe for agricultural irrigation and reducing demand on the village’s scarce water supply. Regular samples of treated effluent show that the system consistently achieves TSS < 5 mg/L, BOD 8-12 mg/L, COD 20-40 mg/L and E. coli 200-250 cfu/100 mL, well below regulated limits.

Construction of Clearford system begins at Carp Airport development in Ottawa

Installation is underway for a new Clearford small bore sewer (SBS®) system to service the West Capital Development at Carp Airport in Ottawa, Ontario. The Clearford system will collect and pre-treat sanitary sewage for a new 329-lot residential subdivision in the west end of the city adjacent to a proposed business airpark.

The development will be served by municipal water and a private communal wastewater system featuring the award-winning Clearford SBS collection network and a specially designed modular membrane bioreactor treatment facility that will expand as the community is built out. Clearford was recently recognized by Frost & Sullivan for the 2017 Global Enabling Technology Leadership Award in the decentralized water and wastewater treatment industry.

The new wastewater treatment system will achieve high quality effluent for discharge to the environmentally sensitive Carp River watershed, as approved by the Ontario Ministry of the Environmental and Climate Change and local Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority. Wastewater treatment efficiencies are enhanced by the Clearford SBS system, where up to 75% of sewage solids are digested in underground ClearDigest® tanks before final treatment. Furthermore, the Clearford system reduces the hydraulic loading to the treatment facility by modulating the peak flow by half compared to conventional sewers, and eliminating inflow and infiltration of clean water to the network by using a sealed pipe system without leaky maintenance holes.

“This project is another exciting step forward for Clearford as the first Clearford system in Ottawa, just minutes from our office. The proximity of the site will allow Clearford to showcase our wastewater solution to local and international visitors,” commented Clearford President and CEO Kevin Loiselle. “For privately owned and operated sewage treatment systems, the SBS system provides a cost effective collection network, which lowers the capital cost and long-term operating costs of sewage treatment.”
