What’s going on at Bottle Rock?
ZIP (Zero Invasive Predators) is a research and development entity focused on developing the tools and techniques to enable an ambitious and exciting vision for New Zealand:
The complete removal of rats, stoats, and possums from large mainland areas – and defence of these areas against reinvasion – for the long term, sustainable protection of native biodiversity.
This model is known as Remove and Protect.
The Remove and Protect approach, if successful, will make it possible to:
  • eradicate predators at sites where it is neither desirable nor possible to construct predator fences
  • reduce our dependence on the repeated wide scale application of toxins at chosen sites
  • enable progressive expansion of a protected area as funds and confidence allow
  • create an environment on the mainland where, in time, ecological integrity could rival that of predator-free offshore islands
ZIP has maintained a 400 hectare field development site at Bottle Rock Peninsula, Queen Charlotte Sound, since September 2014. At Bottle Rock, the team is assessing the effectiveness of the current predator control toolset in a ‘virtual barrier’ system to protect the peninsula against reinvasion, and testing new prototype technologies as they develop.
Join Duncan Kay and Susannah Aitken from the ZIP Team for an update on ZIP’s progress at Bottle Rock and across ZIP’s broader research and development programme.

CRUISING
Some of the rubbish collected during last years Beach Clean
Beach Clean 2017 - Sunday 22 October (Labour Weekend)
Our Beach Clean is a great time to visit all the bays where we have moorings, go ashore and pick up any rubbish.
You only need to bring bags for the rubbish and have some way of getting to land (and back to your boat again!)
There will be a raft-up on the Sunday evening which is likely to be at either Double Bay or Spencer depending on wind direction.
Most boats will do 4-5 beachs
For more details and to register please contact Rear Commodore Cruising - Gerald Harper on 03 573 5925 boat 'Dafrego'

CRUISERS FORUM
March 10/11 2018
With quite a few boats planning to head to the Islands in 2018 a Cruisers Forum will be very useful.
We are very lucky in having David and Patricia from Gulf Harbour Radio and Yachts in Transit coming along and sharing their experience with us.
Interested boats can tune into our morning net as boats are already on the move home. They will be able to hear the weather round up and hear the boats reporting in. That way they will know what they will be dealing with when they get going. It is at 8.15 am so go to www.Yit.nz and click on the Gulf Harbour radio tab (GHR) then down to internet radio.
If there is a topic you would like covered please email: office@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz

New Mussel farm west side of D'Urville Island between Greville Harbour and the Beef Barrels.
Please take care if you are crusing this area as this new farm is not so easy to spot in daylight - it has lights at night.  Please note these GPS coordinates.
Your Stories Wanted!!
We are looking for interesting stories or anecdotes to fill a spot in the newsletter. Do you, or do you know of anyone doing something different (or not so different just interesting), with their boats. Out fishing this weekend and caught a biggie? Had an impromptu raft-up? Found something interesting? Know how to smoke fish or a really good recipe? Doing a delivery trip? Anything really..... Just let us know and we can put it in the newsletter (anonymously if you’re shy).
Just contact Brad or Sue in the office 03 573 6798 or email office@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz
